What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Fillmore Capital Partners?
The Controller will lead the accounting and finance department of our affiliate property management and services company. The Controller is responsible for managing the daily accounting operations - a complex real estate portfolio that encompasses a range of property types including but not limited to, retail, light industrial, office, residential single family, residential multifamily, etc. The Controller is responsible for ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. This role requires a detail-driven accounting professional with substantial real estate experience (at the Senior Staff Accountant level and above), that possesses deep understanding of the nuanced accounting needs by property type, for example, common area maintenance (CAM) reconciliations for commercial real estate, and can demonstrate their ability to analyze financials and translate them into actionable insights.
The Controller’s responsibilities include overseeing financial reporting and statements, managing accounting operations like accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll allocations and billbacks, and the general ledger, and developing budgets and forecasts for properties. They ensure compliance with real estate laws, tax regulations, GAAP, and internal controls, often coordinating with auditors. Other duties involve cash management, handling real estate-specific accounting tasks such as property transactions, leading accounting teams, and communicating financial information to stakeholders.
The ideal candidate thrives in a high-performance environment where accuracy matters (Pennies Matter), timelines matter, and continuous improvement is part of the culture. This individual will develop financial packages, document and implement policies, mentor accounting staff, and ensure that every process and reconciliation “tells the story” behind the numbers. Proactive thinking and effective communication are two essential personality traits for success.
