Terms of Employment:  Permanent, 10 Month Position

 

Nature of Work

The Media Coordinator will be supervised by the school principal and assistant principal and will collaborate with the Executive Director of Technology and Innovation, the District Media and Technology Coordinator, and curriculum leadership. The Media Coordinator supports students, teachers, and staff in implementing curriculum that integrates information literacy, inquiry-based learning, digital technologies and STEM experiences that foster creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.

 

The Media Coordinator provides instructional leadership through coaching, co-teaching, and professional development while maintaining an effective and inclusive Media Center/Learning Commons. The role includes participation on school and district media and technology committees and leadership teams. The Media Coordinator remains current in literacy and technology practices through ongoing professional learning. 

 

Qualifications and Licensure

  • Hold a valid Professional Educator License as a Media Coordinator at the Master Level or
  • Eligible for a provisional Media Coordinator License, by holding a bachelor level teaching license, or bachelor degree in media, or completion of at least 18 graduate semester hours applicable towards a school media coordinator program while working toward the required education and licensure from an accredited college/university/ program.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Instructional Support & Professional Learning
    • Design and deliver before-and after-school training for staff.
    • Provide consultation, assistance, feedback, and modeling of best instructional practices through in-class support.
    • Deliver professional development at faculty meetings, planning sessions, and district PD days.
    • Coach and co-teach with teachers to integrate information literacy, inquiry-based learning, and digital tools.
    • School Level Specific:
      • Elementary: Emphasize foundational literacy, read-alouds, and early research skills; support structured and flexible scheduling; build reading engagement.
      • Middle: Support development of independent research and inquiry skills; reinforce digital citizenship; promote cross-curricular learning.
      • High: Support advanced research, evaluation, and citation practices; promote college and career readiness; use data to inform program impact.
  • Collaboration & Leadership
    • Represent the school at district meetings related to digital technologies and media services.
    • Participate in school and district Professional Development and Technology Committees.
    • Collaborate with curriculum and instructional leadership to integrate digital and information literacy across content areas.
    • Advocate for the media program and communicate its impact on student learning.
  • Media Center & Program Management
    • Monitor and develop the Media Center/Learning Commons collection, including inventory and circulation systems.
    • Lead collection development efforts to ensure resources are current, diverse, and aligned to curriculum and student needs, in accordance with the district’s collection development plan.
    • Ensure equitable access to physical and digital resources for all students and staff.
    • Develop and support STEM experiences that foster creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.
  • Literacy & Student Engagement
    • Promote a culture of reading through schoolwide literacy initiatives and programming.
    • Support students in selecting materials that match interests, needs, and reading levels.
    • Collaborate with staff and families to support literacy development.
  • Digital Learning & Citizenship
    • Support integration of digital tools and technologies into instruction.
    • Teach and model ethical, safe, and responsible use of information and technology.
    • Promote digital citizenship and information fluency.
  • Family & Community Engagement
    • Organize and facilitate parent workshops on digital literacy and technology.
    • Build partnerships with families, community organizations, and community based libraries.
  • Data & Program Improvement
    • Collect and analyze data (usage, instructional impact, student outcomes) to inform program decisions.
    • Align media program goals with the school improvement plan.
    • Evaluate and refine services, instruction, and resources based on data and feedback. 
  • Professional Responsibilities
    • Stay current with developments in digital literacy, technology, and instructional practices.
    • Establish a respectful environment for a diverse population of students.
    • Work collaboratively with the families and significant adults in the lives of their students by improving communication and collaboration between the school and the home and community.
    • Participate in professional development at the school, district, state, or national level.
    • Reflect on practice and implement improvements based on feedback and data.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.

 

Physical Requirements (if applicable)

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.  
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting. 
  • Work has standard vision requirements.  
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. 
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. 
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and operating machines.

Special Requirements (if applicable)

  • Strong knowledge of Media Centers/Learning Commons frameworks.
  • Strong background in North Carolina Course of Study/Common Core and Essential Standards.
  • Experience using digital technologies to support instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with administration and staff.
  • Demonstrated skill in professional development and workshop facilitation
  • Must demonstrate leadership.
  • Must uphold the Code of Ethics and Standards for Professional Conduct.
