Senior Machine Learning Researcher (Hybrid – Tempe, AZ)
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Machine Learning Researcher to join our team in a mission-driven organization focused on scaling digital learning and improving student success through data and AI.
About the Role
This is a hybrid position based in our Tempe, Arizona office. The successful candidate will be required to work on-site at least three days per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Select, develop, and apply advanced machine learning methodologies, statistical procedures, and predictive modeling techniques to solve complex research questions.
- Lead end-to-end machine learning projects, serving as the primary researcher while collaborating with internal teams, external partners, and executive leadership.
- Identify, transform, and prepare large datasets to build robust foundational models for data science and machine learning initiatives.
- Analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data using cutting-edge statistical and ML techniques.
- Author technical reports, presentations, and research articles for publication, highlighting innovative findings and methodologies.
- Present complex research outcomes clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and ensure ongoing data integrity and model performance.
- Collaborate across units on interconnected projects and take on additional responsibilities as needed.
What We’re Looking For
Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Business Analytics, Statistics, Learning Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field AND at least 3 years of relevant professional experience — OR — Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience — OR — any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Proven track record managing multiple direct reports and leading large-scale research projects.
- Strong experience manipulating, analyzing, and reporting on enterprise-level data to create scalable data products and research assets.
- Background in higher education, ideally working with student data.
- Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, and/or Scala; hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as Keras, TensorFlow, and/or PyTorch.
- Solid knowledge of statistical modeling, machine learning, data mining, and text-mining techniques.
- Experience leveraging Python and SQL within cloud environments for advanced analytics.
- Ability to clearly communicate machine learning pipelines, modeling decisions, and results to diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with Jira or similar project management tools.
- Strong critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and excellent written/verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, and to lead by example.
