Job Summary
The Lead Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for overseeing the installation, termination, and testing of structured cabling systems for large-scale commercial and government projects. This role involves both hands-on technical work and supervisory duties, ensuring project quality, efficiency, and adherence to safety and industry standards. The Lead Technician will guide teams through the installation of copper and fiber infrastructure, manage materials and labor forecasting, coordinate with general contractors and clients, and ensure projects are completed on time and within specifications. This is a contract-to-hire position offering opportunities for continued industry training and career growth.
Job Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
- Install and route cable infrastructure including CAT5/E, CAT6, and fiber optic systems
- Dress and route cables into IT closets, modular furniture, and outlet locations
- Install cable pathways such as J-hooks, D-rings, cable trays, and ladder racks
- Perform cable management, dressing, and labeling according to standards
- Terminate cables at patch panels, jacks, keystones, and modular plugs (RJ-45)
- Install and mount Wireless Access Points (WAPs), Fiber ONTs, and network switches
- Construct and organize IT closets, including racks, trays, patch panels, and grounding systems
- Conduct fiber splicing, installation, and testing using Fluke and OTDR equipment
- Read, interpret, and follow blueprints and installation specifications
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment in compliance with OSHA standards
Leadership and Management Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise structured cabling teams to ensure quality and timely completion of installations
- Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for general contractors and clients
- Conduct daily safety meetings and enforce adherence to safety and worksite protocols
- Manage materials, order supplies, and oversee inventory for assigned projects
- Forecast labor needs and allocate resources effectively
- Review and implement blueprint changes, submitting necessary change orders to the Project Manager
- Ensure all installations meet company quality standards and BICSI installation guidelines
- Provide hands-on training, mentorship, and performance feedback to team members
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in commercial structured cabling, low-voltage, or data cable installation
- Strong understanding of BICSI standards for structured cabling installation
- OSHA 10 certification preferred
- Scissor or boom lift certification preferred
- Hilti, fall protection, and confined space certifications preferred
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents accurately
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods
Tools Required
- Basic hand tools including screwdriver (multi-bit), torpedo level, tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel locks, cable stripper, 110/66 punch tool, modular plug crimper, flashlight, hammer, wrench set, gloves, and tool pouch
- Work boots (steel toe or composite toe) required
