Software Development Engineer in Test

Field Medical
Carlsbad, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/30/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/29/2026

Company Overview:

Founded in 2022, Field Medical Inc. is a medical device company advancing next-generation pulsed field ablation (PFA) technologies for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

Field Medical’s flagship innovation, the FieldForce™ Ablation System, is the first contact force focal PFA catheter system designed specifically for ventricular use. By delivering brief, high-intensity electric fields to target cardiac tissue without thermal damage, the system represents a novel approach to treating some of the most challenging arrhythmias. The company’s proprietary FieldBending™ technology enables precise and large-volume lesion creation, supporting a broad range of electrophysiology applications.

About the Role:

At Field Medical, we are looking for a hands-on Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) with experience in both test engineering and embedded software development. You will own the quality and reliability of our embedded firmware for the Drive Control System (DCS) and associated medical device platforms, while also leading the development and maintenance of production tools and internal utilities that support the broader engineering team. This role is central to our quality strategy and our engineering velocity in a fast-paced MedTech environment.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

Test Engineering

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks across embedded firmware and Qt/C application software, including unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Write and review test plans, test cases, and validation protocols in alignment with medical device quality standards
  • Execute manual and automated regression testing; triage failures and drive root cause analysis to resolution
  • Develop and execute test strategies for Qt/C application software, including GUI-level testing, signal/slot behavior on Linux.
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers to define testability requirements early in the design phase
  • Maintain test infrastructure and CI/CD pipeline integrations to ensure reliable and repeatable test execution

Production & Development Tools

  • Lead development and maintenance of non-product software, including manufacturing test scripts and fixtures, device provisioning and calibration utilities, automated data collection and reporting tools, and internal validation and debugging harnesses
  • Partner with the broader engineering team to identify tooling gaps and prioritize development efforts, recognizing that all team members contribute to production tools when priorities allow
  • Establish and maintain best practices for tool versioning, documentation, and release management
  • Build scripted utilities and automation in Python to support firmware development, hardware bring-up, and system integration workflows

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Support design verification and validation (DVT/DVV) activities in a regulated medical device environment
  • Maintain test documentation and traceability within the Helix test management system with meticulous attention to detail
  • Log, track, and resolve software defects with rigorous attention to documentation and compliance requirements
  • Contribute to DHF documentation, traceability matrices, and software risk analysis as applicable
  • Participate in code reviews for test code and production firmware, providing quality-focused feedback

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with firmware engineers, hardware engineers, and quality to deliver integrated, compliant solutions
  • Support design verification and validation activities throughout the development process, adapting to evolving requirements and priorities as the product matures
  • Navigate changing priorities in a dynamic startup environment, shifting focus between development, testing, documentation, and tool support as organizational needs evolve
  • Build strong working relationships across all functional areas, fostering a collaborative culture that drives the company’s mission forward

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline
  • 3 years of experience in software test engineering, SDET, or embedded software development roles
  • Proficiency in Python for scripting, test automation, and tooling development
  • Working knowledge of C and/or C , including familiarity with Qt framework, for reading, writing, and debugging both embedded firmware and application software
  • Solid understanding of software testing principles: unit testing, integration testing, and test-driven development (TDD)
  • Experience with Linux and Windows development environments
  • Familiarity with version control using Git and Bitbucket, including branching strategies, pull requests, and code review workflows
  • Experience with test management systems, particularly Helix
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills with close attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional, collaborative team environments
  • Demonstrated adaptability in dynamic, resource-constrained settings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with embedded targets such as STM32, ARM Cortex-M series, or similar microcontrollers
  • Experience testing Qt/C desktop or application software, including use of Qt Test framework or equivalent GUI test automation tools
  • Familiarity with hardware debugging tools: JTAG, SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes
  • Experience in a medical device or other safety-critical regulated environment (FDA 21 CFR Part 11, IEC 62304 awareness a plus)
  • Knowledge of SPI, I2C, UART, and other common embedded communication protocols
  • Experience building or maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar)
  • Prior experience in a startup or early-stage company environment
  • Direct involvement in regulatory submissions or design control processes

Location & Travel Requirements:

  • On-site, Carlsbad, CA
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%
