What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2.73 Software Engineer, Infrastructure position at Field AI?
Field AI is transforming how robots interact with the real world. We are building risk-aware, reliable, and field-ready AI systems that address the most complex challenges in robotics, unlocking the full potential of embodied intelligence. We go beyond typical data-driven approaches or pure transformer-based architectures, and are charting a new course, with already-globally-deployed solutions delivering real-world results and rapidly improving models through real-field applications.
We’re looking for a Software Engineer, Infrastructure to design, build, and operate the core backend systems that power FieldAI’s globally deployed robotics platform. In this role, you’ll focus on high-performance backend services, real-time data pipelines, and system reliability, enabling seamless communication between robots, sensors, and customer-facing applications operating in complex, real-world environments.
This is a hands-on role for engineers who enjoy working close to the metal, solving hard distributed systems problems, and supporting software that runs in the field, not just the cloud.
\n- Design, build, and maintain backend services supporting real-time robotics systems
- Develop scalable APIs for internal and external consumers
- Design and operate data stores for robotics telemetry, logs, and analyticsDefine clear schema contracts and build SDKs to simplify data access for internal and partner teams
- Support event-driven and message-based communication between robots, backend services, and UIs
- Work closely with robotics engineers to ensure backend systems meet operational, reliability, and performance requirementsImprove system observability, performance, and resilience in production environments
- Typically 5–10 years of experience building and operating backend or infrastructure systems
- Strong backend programming experience with TypeScript (Node.js) and/or PythonSolid understanding of API and SDK design best practices
- Experience designing and operating databases such as Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, or similar systemsExperience building production systems with containerization (Docker) and CI/CD pipelinesStrong system design skills, particularly for high-performance or real-time workloads
- Ability to collaborate effectively across robotics, product, and frontend teams
- Experience working with robotics frameworks such as ROS
- Background supporting sensor data ingestion, telemetry pipelines, or hardware-adjacent systems
- Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systemsFamiliarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or equivalent)Experience supporting field-deployed or safety-critical systems
Our salary range is generous and we take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining final salary; base pay offered may vary considerably depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
