The NOC Engineer I plays a key role in monitoring, troubleshooting, and supporting the performance and stability of customer networks. This role requires a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, strong analytical skills, and excellent communication. The NOC Engineer I is responsible for identifying and resolving issues, performing initial diagnostics, and escalating incidents appropriately to internal teams or external partners.
Essential Job Functions
- Monitor network performance and alarms in real time, ensuring that all alerts are processed quickly and accurately in accordance with established procedures.
- Create, manage, and update trouble tickets; respond promptly to phone calls, emails, and system notifications related to technical support.
- Perform Tier I diagnostics to identify, validate, and triage issues; escalate incidents to internal engineering teams, carriers, or field technicians as needed.
- Coordinate dispatch of field service technicians and/or parts based on troubleshooting results and service requirements.
- Provide clear, professional communication to customers, including status updates, troubleshooting guidance, and escalation details.
- Deliver technical feedback to Engineering teams regarding recurring issues, product performance, and potential design or process improvements.
- Adhere to and maintain network standards, documentation, and operating procedures established by the Architecture & Engineering team.
- Operate effectively in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment while managing competing priorities and occasionally working with demanding customers.
Requirements
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 1 year of NOC or transport network operations experience.
- Education in Telecommunications or related fields preferred.
- A combination of education and experience is acceptable.
- Preferred certifications: CCNA/CCNP, CE-A/CE-P, CECP, JNCIA/JNCIP.
- Experience with optical and routing equipment (Fujitsu Flashwave, Ciena, MRV OptiSwitch, Juniper MX/EX, Force 10).
- Strong understanding of the OSI Model, Ethernet, routed networks, and linear/ring topologies.
- Familiarity with protocols such as MPLS, IS-IS, BGP, and OSPF.
- Ability to quickly isolate, diagnose, and escalate network issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Solid troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability to identify issues, assess risks, and recommend solutions.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively.
- Flexibility for shift work and on-call rotation.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and reach.
- Must be able to speak, write, read, and understand English.
- Must have visual acuity.
