Position Summary: The Technical Sales Engineer plays a critical role in identifying new business opportunities, developing strategic customer relationships, and providing technical guidance to both prospective and existing clients. This role bridges the gap between the customer and internal teams, using engineering insight and market intelligence to drive strategic growth.
KEY REPONSIBILITIES
Market Research & Analysis
- Conduct in-depth market analysis to identify high-potential industries, applications, and companies that align with the company’s core competencies in large-tonnage injection molding.
- Monitor industry trends, competitive landscape, and customer needs to support strategic planning and positioning.
- Develop segmentation strategies and prioritize target markets based on revenue potential, fit, and competitive advantage.
Lead Generation & Business Development
- Identify, qualify, and cultivate new leads through networking, trade shows, outreach, partnerships, and inbound inquiries.
- Maintain a robust pipeline of opportunities and track progress through CRM tools.
- Collaborate with sales leadership to define entry strategies for new accounts and emerging markets.
Voice of Customer (VOC) Development
- Conduct structured interviews, surveys, and technical discussions to understand customer pain points, product needs, and performance requirements.
- Translate VOC insights into actionable technical requirements and business cases.
- Advocate for the customer’s perspective during internal product, process, and service development efforts.
Technical Solution Development
- Work closely with customers’ engineering and design teams to co-develop part designs, material selections, and manufacturability improvements.
- Provide technical feasibility input, including DFM (Design for Manufacturability) reviews, tooling considerations, and processing strategies.
- Act as a liaison between customer technical teams and internal engineering, tooling, and manufacturing teams.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Partner with internal teams including Sales, Program Management, Engineering, and Operations to ensure seamless project initiation and execution.
- Support quoting activities by contributing to technical proposals and RFQ responses.
- Assist in the development of marketing collateral, case studies, and technical presentations tailored to target industries.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, plastics engineering, or a related technical field; or extensive documented training approximating the equivalent.
- 3–5 years of experience in technical sales, application engineering, or business development in the plastics or injection molding industry.
- Desire experience with large-tonnage molding, complex part design, and multi-cavity tooling.
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of thermoplastics, injection molding processes, tooling, and secondary operations.
- Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for reviewing customer part files and discussing design changes.
- Knowledge of part costing, material selection, and process optimization techniques.
Soft Skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills—able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Comfortable engaging with all levels of customer personnel—from engineers to executives.
Location: Corporate HQ in Akron, Ohio (possible hybrid/remote)
Travel required – up to 50%, mostly domestic to customer sites/industry events.
Status: Full-time Salary Exempt, this is an “at will” position.
