Fleet Manager
Location: Lincoln, Rhode Island
Position Summary
Ferreira Construction is seeking an experienced Fleet Manager to oversee the management, maintenance, utilization, and compliance of our fleet of heavy construction equipment, trucks, trailers, and support vehicles throughout the New England region. This individual will be responsible for maximizing equipment availability while controlling operating costs and ensuring all assets meet company safety standards and regulatory requirements.
The Fleet Manager will work closely with Operations, Project Management, Shop Personnel, Dispatch, and Procurement to ensure equipment is properly maintained, efficiently deployed, and available to support active construction projects.
Essential Responsibilities
- Manage all daily fleet operations for heavy civil construction equipment, trucks, trailers, pickups, and support vehicles.
- Coordinate equipment assignments between multiple construction projects to maximize utilization.
- Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules for all fleet assets.
- Oversee equipment inspections, repairs, and warranty work with internal mechanics and outside vendors.
- Monitor equipment downtime and implement corrective actions to improve fleet reliability.
- Maintain detailed maintenance histories and service records for all company-owned assets.
- Manage annual DOT inspections, registrations, permits, licensing, and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, FMCSA, DOT, EPA, and company safety requirements.
- Monitor telematics and GPS systems to improve fleet performance, fuel usage, idle time, and preventative maintenance scheduling.
- Track fuel consumption and identify opportunities to reduce operating costs.
- Assist in equipment replacement planning, budgeting, and capital expenditure forecasting.
- Coordinate equipment purchases, rentals, leases, and disposals.
- Negotiate pricing and service agreements with equipment vendors, repair facilities, and suppliers.
- Maintain accurate inventory levels of replacement parts, tires, lubricants, and shop supplies.
- Supervise shop personnel, mechanics, and fleet coordinators while promoting a culture of safety and accountability.
- Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns and prioritize repairs to minimize project downtime.
- Work closely with project teams to forecast equipment needs and transportation logistics.
- Prepare reports on fleet utilization, maintenance costs, repair trends, fuel usage, and equipment lifecycle performance.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives that increase equipment availability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- 7 years of fleet management experience within heavy civil construction, utility, transportation, excavation, or infrastructure industries.
- Strong knowledge of heavy construction equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, cranes, paving equipment, dump trucks, tractors, trailers, and support vehicles.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment maintenance practices.
- Understanding of DOT regulations, FMCSA compliance, OSHA requirements, and fleet safety programs.
- Experience managing preventive maintenance programs and equipment lifecycle planning.
- Experience with fleet management software, maintenance management systems, GPS tracking, and telematics platforms.
- Strong budgeting, forecasting, and cost control skills.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with ERP or fleet management software is preferred.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- ASE, DOT, or other fleet management certifications.
- Experience managing fleets supporting utility, heavy highway, renewable energy, or civil construction projects.
- Knowledge of equipment transportation logistics and permitting.
- Experience leading mechanics and shop operations.
