Bus Driver
Position Title: Bus Driver
Department/School: Transportation
Classification/Union: Teamsters
Reports to: Director of Transportation
Overview:
The Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students and other authorized persons over regular and special education school bus routes, extra‐curricular and special activity trips, field trips, and sporting events, as authorized by the school district in all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow, ice, and sunshine.
Education and Experience/Desired Qualifications:
· High School Diploma or equivalent required
· Minimum of five year’s licensed driving experience
· Successful completion of comprehensive driving course (provided by school district)
· Washington State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class B) with Passenger, School Bus, and Air-Brake Restriction Removed endorsements OR willingness to obtain
· Ability to pass DOT physical and remain current with this requirement
· Ability to meet physical requirements established by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and be evaluated and certified annually
· Must pass drug /alcohol screening and willingness to maintain this requirement through random drug/alcohol testing
· Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance and Background check
· Completion of all district‐required trainings within established guidelines (i.e, First Aid, Safe Schools, etc.)
· Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the district may find appropriate and acceptable
Essential Job Functions:
· RELIABLE and timely attendance and dependability is essential to this position
· Comply with and operate school bus in accordance with Washington State laws, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) policies and procedures, Ferndale School District policies and procedures, and as directed by the FSD Director of Transportation
· Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus and all related equipment (pre and post trip mandatory inspections)
· Operate all school bus equipment, hand and foot controls, and accessories installed in bus, as requirement by Washington State (minimum) School Bus Specifications, including but not limited to fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, first aid kits, etc. Ensure that equipment is in good working order and ready for use
· Drive school bus on scheduled routes and/or on all types of trips in support of district approved activities both within and outside of the school district boundaries
· Maintain control of all passengers as related to safety and report unsafe acts or conditions, which require attention, to the Dispatch Office, Director of Transportation, FSD Administrator members, and EMS/LEA authority.
· Legibly and accurately complete forms, records, timesheets, trip requests, route studies, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports, and other clerical type activities as required by the state or district policies and procedures
· Service and clean bus and related equipment as required by state, district, and department policy
· Perform basic first aid as appropriate
· Attend all mandatory classes related to school bus operations including training directed by the Director of Transportation or the FSD (Ferndale School District)
· Perform bus driver related duties and carry out assignments and instructions as issued from Dispatch and Director of Transportation

· Is physically able to perform daily routine school bus vehicle safety inspections
· Has sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required in order to provide evacuation assistance to students
· Deal with a wide range of student behaviors that may include angry or distraught students and or parents
· Professionally interact and communicate with students, parents, staff, and the public both in written and oral English language.
· Be constantly alert and aware of all safety factors
Physical Requirements:(i.e., sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, walking, and fine motor skills. Also cognitive demands like visual and perceptual skills, attention, and memory)
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under some extreme temperature and under some hazardous conditions.
