The expected hiring range for this position is:

$88,800.00-$126,267.00.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

This position is not eligible for referral bonus program and relocation assistance. This position is eligible for sponsorship assistance.

About the Role:

Fermilab is seeking an Engineering Physicist II within our Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) project. The Engineering Physicist II under the general direction of a more senior Engineering Physicist, Engineer, or Scientist utilizes a fundamental knowledge of physics, together with the problem-solving skills and an understanding of engineering, to design moderate to complex components, processes, and systems with a proficiency in the use of some of the following: modern analytical tools, software and hardware development, integration and testing, design of microelectronics circuitry, and the physics principles used in modern scientific, chemical, and mechanical and/or engineering applications. These individual monitors and tests and examine operations of facilities to isolate and define problems with proper functioning of equipment and to insure efficient functioning and conformance with Safety specifications and regulations. This position evaluates findings and develops plans and improvements to meet project or operation goals that bring a project to operating status; or facilitates an operation that routinely requires understanding and application of the above designs.

What your day-to-day as an Engineering Physicist II (PIP-II) will look like:

  • Designs and develops equipment or sub-systems, including specification of components and performance verification requirements.
  • Operates facilities or complex equipment to perform data collection and tests.
  • Monitors tests and examines operations of facilities to isolate and define problems with proper functioning of equipment and to insure efficient functioning and conformance with Safety specifications and regulations.
  • Develops plans to monitor the operation and maintenance of equipment used in advanced physics measurements or detector development at the sub-system level, detecting trends and debugging equipment.
  • Plans and assists in inquiries to discover facts or to test hypotheses concerning the equipment or system in assigned area.
  • Evaluates findings and develops plans and improvements to meet project or operation goals that bring a project to operating status.
  • Detects irregularities of a system through a complete understanding of a system and its subsystems.
  • Interacts with other specialists to coordinate the modification and repair of the system and to propose new, improved or upgraded systems.
  • Selects and applies appropriate engineering standards to meet assignment objectives.
  • Determines vendors and technologies for performance evaluation.
  • Determines measurement/tests needed to evaluate system performance.
  • Implements modest changes in scope as required according to predefined change control procedures based on analytical results.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Holds a bachelor’s degree or higher degree in some technical discipline (e.g. Physics, Engineering). 3 years’ experience.

Please note that the described work arrangement is subject to change based on business needs and is not guaranteed to be final.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
