Job Title: PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH INSTRUCTOR

SUMMARY: Each teacher is assigned yearly to a position which is under the direct supervision of an administrator to whom he/she is immediately responsible for all aspects of his/her professional behavior. The primary responsibility of all other personnel is to support the instructional efforts of District teaching personnel. The teachers' evaluation criteria is based upon, but not limited to, specific minimum job expectations and responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned
- Plans a health/physical education program to promote development of student's health/physical attributes and social skills.
- Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Teaches physical education/health classes for handicapped pupils as necessary.
- Instructs individuals or groups in beginning or advanced calisthenics, gymnastics, or corrective exercises, determining type and level of difficulty of exercises, corrections needed, and prescribed movements.
- Teaches and demonstrates use of gymnastic and training apparatus such as trampolines and weights.
- Confers with students, parents, and counselor to resolve student problems.
- Selects, stores, orders, issues, and inventories equipment, materials, and supplies used in the health/physical education program.
- Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom/physical education area.
- Is responsible for pupil attendance accounting as delegated by the administrator to whom they are responsible.
- Evaluates each pupil's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and in professional growth activities.
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Assists teachers in the elementary schools to correlate health instruction with other subjects taught.
- Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
- Administers or monitors group tests.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Perpetuates and maintains professional working relationships with colleagues.
- Works with various health agencies in the community, both public and private, in implementing the health services which are offered to students in the public schools.
- Maintains an open-minded and professional attitude toward background information pertaining to students by working with each student on his/her merits as an individual and making use of appropriate records to enhance the educational developments of students.

QUALIFICATIONS - To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE - Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from an accredited college or university; and a valid Montana teaching certificate with an endorsement in health and physical education. (For elementary Physical Education an endorsement in Elementary Curriculum is acceptable).
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS - The work environment for instructors has increasingly become technology driven. Lewistown Public Schools expects staff to meet reasonable expectations in the use of computers and other technology, in and out of the classroom.
LANGUAGE SKILLS - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

DRUG FREE WORKPLACE - Screening tests for alcohol and illegal drug use may be required before hiring and during your employment in the Lewistown Public Schools. Employees of Lewistown Public Schools must submit to a fingerprint criminal background check. Any appointment will be contingent upon the results of the criminal background report received from the Department of Justice, which must be acceptable to the Board of Trustees, in its sole discretion.
