Fenton Development Group is a diversified family office that invests in, owns, and operates businesses and real estate across multiple industries.

In addition to managing its investment and operating portfolio, Fenton Development Group is building internal technology to improve how information, investments, financial data, documents, and business operations are managed across the organization.

Our environment is hands-on and fast-moving. Team members work directly with leadership and operating teams and have the opportunity to solve real business problems rather than work within a narrow technical function.

Fenton Development Group is seeking a Software Engineer to help build and expand the technology platform used to support our family office, investments, real estate portfolio, and operating businesses.

This is a full-time, on-site position based in Troy, Michigan.

The Software Engineer will work closely with leadership to translate real operational and financial workflows into software. This role is well suited for someone who enjoys building systems from the ground up, solving ambiguous problems, and seeing their work used directly by the people running the business.

Responsibilities will include:

• Designing, developing, testing, and maintaining internal software applications
• Building and maintaining APIs, back-end services, and database-driven applications
• Developing tools that organize and connect financial, investment, real estate, and operational information
• Integrating third-party systems, APIs, and external data sources
• Building workflows for document management, data extraction, reporting, and business processes
• Working with relational databases and designing reliable data models
• Developing secure authentication, permissions, and user-access functionality
• Supporting AI-enabled features, automation, and intelligent workflows
• Troubleshooting application issues and improving system reliability and performance
• Contributing to front-end functionality when needed
• Reviewing and improving existing code and architecture
• Using version control and maintaining clean, documented, production-quality code
• Working directly with business users to understand problems and turn them into practical software solutions

Because this is a growing internal platform, the role will involve a mix of new development, integration work, architecture decisions, and improvement of existing systems.

• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, application architecture, and software design principles
• Experience building production-quality software applications
• Experience developing APIs and server-side applications
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, Java, or a similar language
• Experience working with SQL databases and designing data models
• Familiarity with Git and modern software development practices
• Understanding of APIs, authentication, cloud infrastructure, and application security
• Ability to troubleshoot technical problems independently
• Ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-structured code
• Strong communication skills and an ability to understand business requirements
• Comfortable working in an environment where requirements may evolve as the product develops
• Ability to work full-time on-site in Troy, Michigan

Experience in any of the following areas is helpful but not required:

• Full-stack application development
• React, Next.js, or similar modern web frameworks
• Python-based services or data processing
• PostgreSQL or other relational databases
• Cloud platforms and modern deployment environments
• AI or large language model integrations
• Document processing and data extraction
• Financial technology or financial data
• Internal business applications
• Real estate, investment management, accounting, or family office systems
• Microsoft 365 or enterprise system integrations

We are looking for someone who likes to build.

This is not a role where every requirement will arrive as a completed technical specification. You may sit with a member of the team, understand how a process currently works, identify what can be automated or improved, and then help design and build the solution.

• The right person will be curious, practical, comfortable learning new technologies, and capable of taking ownership of a problem from idea through implementation.
