Position Overview
Fence Concepts is a Minnesota-based fence installation company specializing in residential and commercial fencing. We are seeking a hands-on Fence Installer / Crew Lead to run day-to-day operations on job sites, install a variety of fence types, and lead a small crew to complete projects safely, efficiently, and with high quality.
The ideal candidate has strong construction skills, takes pride in their work, and is comfortable directing others, communicating with customers, and representing Fence Concepts on-site.
Key Responsibilities
Crew Leadership & Job Management
- Lead a crew of 2–4 installers on residential and commercial fence projects.
- Review job plans, materials lists, and site conditions prior to starting work.
- Organize daily tasks, assign work to crew members, and ensure productivity and quality standards are met.
- Communicate with the office, project managers, and customers about schedules, site issues, or changes.
- Ensure each job is completed on time, within scope, and according to Fence Concepts standards.
Fence Installation
- Install wood, vinyl, chain link, ornamental, and other fence types according to specifications.
- Set posts (augering, digging, concrete setting) and ensure proper alignment, depth, and spacing.
- Install rails, panels, pickets, gates, and hardware with attention to detail and structural integrity.
- Read and interpret site plans, property lines, and measurements; use string lines, levels, and tape measures to ensure straight, plumb, and level installations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve common field issues (grade changes, obstacles, buried utilities, property line clarifications).
Safety & Site Management
- Maintain a safe work environment and enforce safety procedures for all crew members.
- Conduct pre-job safety checks and ensure proper use of PPE and tools.
- Call in and respect utility locates (e.g., Gopher State One Call) and follow all guidelines to avoid utility damage.
- Keep job sites organized, clean, and respectful of customer property.
- Properly load, transport, and secure materials, tools, and equipment.
Quality & Customer Service
- Ensure work meets Fence Concepts' quality standards, as well as manufacturer and code requirements.
- Address customer questions or concerns professionally on-site, escalating issues to management when needed.
- Perform final walkthroughs with customers when appropriate and confirm satisfaction with completed work.
Job Expectations
- Work Schedule:
- Full-time, generally Monday–Friday.
- Start times are often early mornings; occasional evenings may be required during peak season or due to weather delays.
- Work Environment:
- Outdoor work in varying Minnesota weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
- Physically demanding work including lifting, digging, carrying materials, and operating equipment.
- Performance Expectations:
- Complete projects efficiently without sacrificing quality or safety.
- Lead by example in work ethic, professionalism, and safety.
- Protect company equipment and maintain tools in proper working condition.
- Accurately track hours, materials used, and any changes to the scope of work.
- Represent Fence Concepts professionally at all times on customer properties and in the community.
Required Qualifications
- Valid driver's license with a clean or acceptable driving record.
- Reliable transportation to the shop or designated meet-up location.
- Ability to lift 80 lbs repeatedly and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the day.
- Ability to work outdoors in all typical Minnesota weather conditions.
- Basic math and measurement skills; able to read a tape measure accurately.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to give clear instructions to crew members.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Experience & Skills
- 2 years of experience in fence installation, construction, landscaping, or a related trade.
- Prior crew lead, foreman, or supervisory experience in a field construction setting.
- Experience installing:
- Wood privacy and picket fences
- Vinyl fences
- Chain link (residential and light commercial)
- Ornamental steel or aluminum fencing
- Gates, operators, and related hardware (a plus, but not required)
- Experience operating construction equipment such as skid steers, post-hole augers, and power tools.
- Familiarity with local building codes, zoning, and property line considerations is helpful.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing site conditions.
- Customer service mindset: professional attitude, courteous, and respectful on every job.
