Federated Co-ops is seeking a motivated and hands-on Seasonal Shop Intern to join our busy shop specializing in the repair and maintenance of commercial vehicles and agriculture equipment. This internship offers an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain real-world experience in diesel and automotive repair while learning key industry practices such as DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, and equipment diagnosis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Shop Intern include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist mechanics in performing DOT inspections on commercial vehicles
- Learn to identify mechanical issues in diesel engines, light and heavy-duty trucks, and agricultural equipment.
- Support repair and maintenance activities including oil changes, brake work, and basic engine diagnostics
- Assist with tire repair
- Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment
- Shadow experienced mechanics to gain hands-on knowledge of tools, safety protocols, and troubleshooting techniques
- Assist with shop documentation and work order tracking under supervision
- Assist with preventative maintenance and troubleshooting
Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, or related technical program
- Willingness to learn, take direction, and work in a fast-paced environment
- Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with tools
- Ability to utilize the tools that are essential to the job function
Certificates and Licenses:
- Valid Class D Driver’s license

Routinely operate computerized equipment along with lathes, welding torches, pneumatic wrenches, hydraulic jacks, screwdrivers, pliers, mallets, and precision gauges. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance.
The wage range for this position is $15 - $20 / hour. The actual pay offered will vary based on multiple factors which include, without limitation, experience, education, training, specialized skills and certifications.
