POSITION SUMMARY: The APE specialist assesses and provides specially designed PE instruction for kindergarten through high school age students with motor and/or cognitive delays/difficulties that adversely impact their success in the general physical education setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned.   • Participate successfully as a member of the educational learning community. Collaborate and consult with parents, preschool teachers, special education teachers, general education teachers, school evaluation teams, physical education specialists, other adapted PE specialists, occupational and physical therapists, nurses, psychologists, administrators, and others as needed.
  • Administer APE evaluations and write comprehensive report:
  • Assess student's level of understanding and performance of physical education skills and concepts and the effect upon the student's ability to participate safely, successfully, and meaningfully in the general PE setting
  • Based on evaluation results, make a recommendation regarding the student receiving APE services
  • Enter evaluation report into online system in a timely manner.
  • Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Service Delivery for those students who qualify for services
  • Establish areas of focus for individual students, K-12 (IEP goals & objectives, supplemental aides and services) and enter them into the online system in a timely manner
  • Determine service delivery model:
  • Direct (whole class, small group, or individual), within general PE class (GPE), collaboration with General Ed PE teacher
  • SAS: supplementary aids and services provided within the general PE environment
  • Facilitate/teach program(s) to achieve established goals
  • Maintain written records:
  • Assessment reports
  • Individualized Education Program (IEPs)
  • Collect and utilize data and frequent ongoing progress monitoring systems to inform instructional decisions or revisions
  • Enter student progress notes into online progress report system at report card intervals
  • Enter grades into online gradebook system
  • Update caseload monthly
  • Attend annual IEP meetings
  • Attend triennial meetings

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

Washington State teaching certificate, K-12 physical education

Special Education endorsement

Additional Requirements

Professional evidence that demonstrates strong skills for collaborative leadership, coaching effective instructional practices, and supporting students and families.

Preferred Qualifications

Training or experience in serving students with moderate to severe disabilities

Knowledge and an appreciation of other languages and cultures

Conditions Of Employment

Criminal background clearance

Valid Washington State Driver's License and proof of insurance

First Aid and CPR certificate and maintain certification

Successfully complete the FWPS district approved Right Response training at the advanced level at the next available time; maintain current certification at the advanced level through an annual recertification class.

Willingness to travel to multiple school sites around the district each day

Plan, implement, and evaluate individualized programs for students

Work with children of various ages and a variety of disabilities (kindergarten – 12th grade).

Skill in operating a computer and ability to learn and use various software programs

Work effectively under varying levels of pressure

Intervene in situations of imminent likelihood of serious harm using district approved Right Response techniques, including de-escalation strategies and restraint when needed

Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

Organize and perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently without close supervision and able to pay strict attention to detail

Communicate effectively through spoken and written word; read and follow written or verbal communications

Practice effective safety and security within individual work routines

Develop and maintain positive relationships with staff and service providers

Work collaboratively with District staff and promote teamwork with co-workers

Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality

Relate effectively with parents, staff, students and community members in a multicultural and multiracial community

Excellent Communication Skills And Effective Problem-solving Abilities

Ability to work independently and manage time effectively

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently be required to reach, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, handle/grasp, talk, and hear. The employee will occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, lift and reach overhead, twist torso and neck, and fine motor manipulation. The employee will occasionally be required to lift/carry a maximum of 50 pounds. The employee will occasionally be required to push/pull a maximum weight of 200 pounds. Anything over the weight limits will be performed as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions. The employee will experience constant interruptions; required to meet deadlines. The employee will be exposed to infectious diseases carried by students and exposed to unpredictable students who may grab or bite. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee will regularly perform community-based instruction requiring exposure to outdoor conditions and community environment.

This position reports to and is evaluated by the Executive Director of Student Support Services or designee.
