Director of Finance & Administration

We are seeking an experienced Director of Finance & Administration to serve as the senior financial leader for our growing general contracting company. This key leadership role will oversee all financial operations, provide strategic financial analysis, ensure compliance and risk management, and provide oversight of payroll, human resources, and office administration.
The Director of Finance & Administration will work closely with the President, Leadership Team, and Operations staff to maintain the company's financial health, improve processes, and support informed business decisions. This position supervises the accounting and administrative support team, including the Payroll & Benefits Coordinator and Office Administrator.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Management
- Oversee all financial operations, including:
- General ledger
- Cash management
- Accounts payable
- Accounts receivable
- Maintain accurate financial records and reporting.
- Supervise and develop accounting and administrative staff.
- Foster strong relationships with owners, vendors, subcontractors, suppliers, and employees.
Cash Management
- Monitor and forecast company cash flow.
- Maintain a positive cash position.
- Provide weekly cash status updates to leadership and operations teams.
- Support payment-release decisions and financial planning.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of vendor and subcontractor payments.
- Monitor receivables and aging reports.
- Support lien waiver compliance and collection efforts.
- Collaborate with operations teams to improve cash flow performance.
Financial Analysis & Reporting
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes.
- Review work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and job costing data.
- Prepare financial statements, forecasts, and management reports.
- Analyze financial performance and recommend strategic improvements.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Develop and manage annual budgets.
- Conduct monthly budget-to-actual variance analysis.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Prepare financial projections and cash flow forecasts.
- Support capital expenditure planning.
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities for automation and workflow optimization.
- Improve internal controls and reporting capabilities.
- Leverage technology, business intelligence tools, dashboards, and AI-enabled solutions to enhance decision-making.
Payroll, Benefits & Human Resources Oversight
- Provide oversight of payroll processing and compliance.
- Review payroll allocations, certified payroll reporting, and payroll reconciliations.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the company's benefits providers.
- Monitor HR compliance, onboarding, employee records, and employment-related processes.
- Coordinate annual workers' compensation audits.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and contractual requirements.
- Maintain strong internal controls to protect company assets.
- Oversee banking relationships, loan covenants, bonding, insurance requirements, and audit support.
- Monitor credit card activity, expense reporting, ACH transactions, and positive-pay processes.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably within the construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Construction accounting
- Job costing
- Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
- Construction billing practices
- Experience supervising and developing accounting and administrative staff.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- High level of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential information.
Preferred
- CPA designation (not required).
- Experience with Viewpoint Vista or similar construction accounting software.
- Advanced Excel skills, including:
- PivotTables
- Power Query
- Financial modeling
- Experience implementing:
- Workflow automation
