What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head of Electrical Engineering position at FBA Engineering?

Costa Mesa, CA | In-Office Leadership Role

Build, Lead, and Shape the Future of Electrical Design

If you're an experienced electrical engineer who enjoys leading teams, owning complex projects, and being a trusted technical voice for clients, this role gives you the platform to do exactly that.

We're a focused electrical consulting firm known for technical rigor, strong client relationships, and practical, buildable designs. Our work spans healthcare, K-12 education, multifamily, and commercial projects--with healthcare and education representing our fastest growth. We're looking for a senior-level electrical engineer ready to step into a visible leadership role and help guide the next phase of our firm.

What You'll Do

As Head of Electrical Engineering, you'll be the go-to leader for our electrical discipline. You'll balance hands-on technical work with mentorship, client engagement, and strategic input alongside the firm's principals.

Lead Complex Electrical Design

  • Take ownership of electrical system design across lighting, power distribution, low-voltage, and fire alarm systems.
  • Drive solutions for healthcare and K-12 projects including retrofits, renovations, expansions, and new construction.
  • Ensure all work meets code requirements, best practices, and client expectations.

Be a Trusted Client Partner

  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for key education and healthcare clients.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and construction administration.
  • Build long-term relationships through consistency, clarity, and technical excellence.

Develop and Mentor a Team

  • Lead a small group of engineers and drafters (2-3 direct reports).
  • Coach and mentor staff to strengthen technical skills, accountability, and confidence.
  • Set standards for quality, collaboration, and professional growth.

Contribute to the Firm's Growth

  • Support proposals and pursuits with technical insight and strategy.
  • Help expand our healthcare and education portfolio through thought leadership and client engagement.
  • Partner with principals to refine workflows, improve efficiency, and elevate delivery standards.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Master's a plus).
  • PE license strongly preferred.
  • 10 years of electrical engineering experience, ideally with healthcare and/or education projects.
  • Proven experience leading projects and mentoring engineers.
  • Strong command of NEC, NFPA, Title 24, and healthcare-specific design standards.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and standard electrical design tools.
  • Clear communicator with the confidence to lead internally and externally.

What Success Looks Like

  • You quickly establish credibility with clients and take ownership of key healthcare and education projects.
  • The team produces consistent, high-quality deliverables with fewer revisions and smoother coordination.
  • Engineers are engaged, supported, and growing under your leadership.
  • Clients trust you as a technical advisor--not just a designer.
  • Project efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction noticeably improve.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $150,000-$200,000 , with flexibility up to $225,000 for exceptional candidates.
  • Equity opportunity for the right individual.
  • Competitive benefits including health, dental, retirement contributions, and PTO.
  • Professional development, continuing education, and licensing costs covered.
