Job Description: Fayetteville High School is seeking a creative, collaborative, and technically skilled theatre educator for a high school theatre position. The ideal candidate will foster students’ exploration of theatre through technical theatre pathways, with a strong emphasis on scenic construction, lighting design, and sound production. This educator will support students from beginning to advanced levels in a positive, organized, and enthusiastic environment.
This position involves coordinating with a team of theatre and fine arts educators to provide meaningful opportunities for creative expression while supporting the continued growth of the FHS Theatre Program. The role comes with an expectation of integrating high-quality technical theatre elements into all performances. This role will work closely with the FHS Performing Arts Center Manager to coordinate production needs, calendars, and facility usage. Instruction includes teaching beginning through advanced technical theatre courses aligned with the Arkansas Department of Education Drama Standards.
Primary Teaching Responsibilities:
- Daily instruction to be taught in the following areas, based on annual program enrollment:
- Technical Theatre I, II, III, and IV - Year-long courses in which students develop and refine both performance and production skills in drama and theatrical design. Coursework includes acting, directing, and a progression of technical theatre skills such as scenic construction, lighting design and programming, and sound design and reinforcement. Theatre IV emphasizes advanced leadership, directing, and production management, including technical direction and design processes.
- In addition to instructional planning periods, One class period is dedicated all year to planning and production for FHS Theatre productions.
Supervision of a grade-level advisory class, providing academic and personal guidance to assigned students and creating intervention and extension sessions for students to attend as needed during the advisory period.
Additional Duties Will Include:
- Construction and creation of design elements for all productions including, but not limited to scenic, sound, and lighting.
- Supervising and mentoring students in technical theatre roles, including set construction crews, lighting technicians, and sound engineers
- Supporting and attending local, regional, and state Thespian Troupe events and competitions
- Collaborating with Theatre and Fine Arts Department faculty to expand interdisciplinary and cross-curricular opportunities, particularly in design and production
- Coordinating schedules and facility usage with Performing Arts Center Manager
- Managing and maintaining theatre facilities, tools, and equipment with a focus on safety and best practices in technical theatre
- Maintaining accurate records of student progress and communicating effectively with students, parents, and colleagues
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, or related field (required).
- Valid Arkansas teaching license in Theatre, or the ability to obtain one (required).
- Experience working or teaching high school students in a theatrical setting.
- Strong knowledge of theatre history, performance and production techniques.
- Excellent communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative learning environment.
Work Schedule:
- Full-time position aligned with the Fayetteville Public Schools and Fayetteville High School academic calendar.
- Extended contract and after school commitments during as needed to support departmental needs.
