The primary purpose of this position is to maintains, troubleshoots, evaluates, and repairs electrical systems such as generators, normal power distribution, emergency power distribution, lighting, control panels, and electrical connections to equipment. Assists other shops with availability of electrical power, electrical connections to equipment, and troubleshooting.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
  • Electric Drawings
  • Electrical Equipment
  • Technical Practices (Electrical Electronic)
  • Troubleshooting (Electrical)
  • Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work)
  • Without more than normal supervision


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections and tasks on electrical systems and related components to determine wear, reliability and load capabilities.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains distribution panels, boxes, generator and various electrical systems.
  • Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and/or fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Assembles, installs, tests, or maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, or fixtures, using proper tools.
  • Uses proper techniques and knowledge of electrical wiring and equipment maintenance.
  • Prepares sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
  • Follows installation, maintenance, and repair manuals to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Interprets and applies manufacturer's handbooks, technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams to determine material, tools, and equipment needed.
  • Tests electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, such as oscilloscopes, ammeters, or test lamps.
  • Repairs or replaces wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using hand tools or power tool.
  • Inspects electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Troubleshoots circuits, controls and systems to locate, repair and replace defective components.
Preferred to have a valid Journeyman (not residential) electrical license from the state of Arkansas or from a state that reciprocates with Arkansas.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent will perform some duties that require considerable physical effort. Namely: installing or repairing light fixtures, speakers, exit and signal lights, etc., while standing on a ladder; installing conduit above ceilings or beneath floors; pulling large conductors. handling large motors, pumps, compressors, and fans.
