What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Officer position at Fayette County Sheriff's Office?
The Fayette County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Detention Officer. Applicants must be able to work shift work on any and all departmental shifts (day, evening, midnight) as well as holidays. Applicants must pick up an employment application in person at the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. Mandatory qualifications and skills are:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED
Must be a citizen of the United States
Must possess a valid driver’s license (Excessive driving history may be a disqualifying factor)
Must not have been convicted of or entered a plea of nolo contender to any felony or misdemeanor crime dealing with force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor (including DUI), or controlled substances / narcotics ? fingerprints will be submitted to TBI for verification
Must not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States - must provide DD-214 indicating HONORABLE DISCHARGE
Must be current on all court ordered child support payments (if applicable)
Must be free from any disorder as described in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association that would, in the professional judgment of the examiner, impair the subject's ability to perform any essential function of the job or would cause the subject to pose a direct threat to public safety ?psychological screening given by licensed health care provider qualified in psychiatric or psychological fields
Must submit to a thorough background check as well as pre-employment psychological, physical, and drug screening
Must have good moral character and work ethic as determined by a thorough investigation by the Sheriff’s Office
Must have the ability to attend mandatory scheduled training, some of which may be conducted out of town
Must possess the ability to obtain required training certifications for the position
Must possess basic computing skills
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills including English usage, diction, grammar, and spelling
Must possess the ability to use patience and tact in dealing with inmates
Must be able to perform a number of tasks simultaneously (multi-tasking) with the ability to remain calm, think clearly, and quickly assess, evaluate and respond to stressful situations
Must possess prioritization skills and the ability to make sound decisions using all available information
Must have the skills to accomplish tasks in a controlled, effective manner while working under stress
Must have skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of individuals including law enforcement personnel, coworkers, and the general public

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
