Animal Services Specialist

The Fayette County Animal Shelter is seeking a dependable and compassionate Animal Services Specialist to assist with animal care, shelter operations, and field response throughout Fayette County.

This position combines hands-on shelter work with responding to animal-related calls in the field. When not actively responding to or handling an assigned field call, the Animal Services Specialist is expected to report to and work at the Fayette County Animal Shelter, assisting with animal care, cleaning, and daily shelter operations.

This is a civilian, non-law-enforcement position and does not have arrest, citation, or other law-enforcement authority.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to calls involving stray, abandoned, injured, neglected, or potentially abused animals.
  • Safely capture, handle, and transport animals to the shelter, veterinary facilities, rescues, or other approved locations.
  • Document field calls, animal pickups, and concerns involving possible neglect or cruelty.
  • Refer situations requiring enforcement action to the appropriate law-enforcement agency.
  • Work at the Fayette County Animal Shelter whenever not actively assigned to or responding to a field call.
  • Feed, water, exercise, and provide daily care for shelter animals.
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, animal housing areas, equipment, and common areas.
  • Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral concerns.
  • Assist with animal intake, adoptions, owner reclaims, foster placements, and rescue transfers.
  • Assist with veterinary appointments and animal transportation as needed.
  • Maintain accurate animal and field-response records.
  • Assist visitors and members of the public with animal-related questions and shelter services.
  • Maintain County vehicles and animal transport equipment in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Assist with laundry, dishes, stocking supplies, general cleaning, and other daily shelter duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Experience working with animals is preferred.
  • Ability to safely handle dogs, cats, and other domestic animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with difficult animals or emotionally challenging situations.
  • Basic computer, recordkeeping, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and as part of the shelter team.

Physical & Work Requirements

Applicants must be able to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, kneel, crouch, push, and pull; safely handle and restrain animals; and regularly lift at least 25 pounds.

Work is performed both at the Fayette County Animal Shelter and throughout Fayette County. The position may involve exposure to animal waste, odors, cleaning chemicals, noise, bites, scratches, and animals with unknown health or vaccination histories.

Occasional work outside normal business hours, including weekends, holidays, or emergency situations, may be required.

Please Note: Field response is only one part of this position. When not actively handling an animal-related call or other assigned field duty, the employee is required to be at the Fayette County Animal Shelter performing animal care, cleaning, and other assigned shelter duties.

Pay: $14.00 per hour
