Controller

Faulconer Construction
Charlottesville, VA Full Time
POSTED ON 5/22/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/19/2026

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

Position Summary:

Lead the company's accounting operations while serving as a strategic business partner to the Chief Financial Officer. This is not a traditional maintenance accounting role but rather a leadership position that combines strong accounting discipline with operational awareness, process improvement mindset, and a customer-service approach to supporting the business. Own the integrity of the accounting function, lead the monthly close and financial reporting processes, strengthen internal controls, and help improve the systems and processes that support a growing, high-performing organization. The Controller is equally comfortable ensuring accounting accuracy, improving workflows, supporting operational leaders, and helping leadership better understand the financial story behind the business. The Controller will conduct business in a professional manner, strive for value-add, and maintain Faulconer's Core Values at all times.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Accounting Operations: Lead all day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency across the accounting function while maintaining the integrity of the general ledger and supporting accounting records.
  • Financial Close: Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, preparing and overseeing preparation of accurate internal financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Account Management: Oversee fixed asset accounting, depreciation, debt accounting, and lease accounting while ensuring timely account reconciliations and resolution of issues.
  • Payroll & AP Oversight: Oversee payroll review and accounting-related payroll controls, lead oversight of accounts payable operations, and provide accounting support for billing and accounts receivable processes.
  • Treasury Management: Own treasury visibility including daily cash position monitoring, short-term cash forecasting, and debt schedule management.
  • Construction Accounting: Partner closely with operations leadership to support accurate job cost reporting and financial visibility, maintaining heavy involvement in work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and construction accounting processes.
  • Contract Performance Analysis: Support monthly contract performance analysis, forecasting, and related financial review processes while assisting in identifying financial risks, reporting issues, and process improvement opportunities tied to project operations.
  • Business Insights: Help translate financial results into meaningful business insights for operational leaders, bridging the gap between accounting data and operational decision-making.
  • Audit Management: Lead annual audit preparation and serve as primary accounting contact for external auditors while maintaining strong internal accounting controls and supporting continuous improvement in the control environment.
  • Tax & Compliance: Coordinate tax compliance processes with external advisors, including income tax support, sales/use tax oversight, and related filings. Support banking covenant reporting and related lender compliance requirements. Assist, as needed, with bonding support activities.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and drive accounting process improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and visibility. Partner with finance and business systems leadership to improve accounting workflows and controls.
  • Systems Modernization: Help modernize accounting processes through better use of technology, automation, and reporting tools. Participate in broader finance systems initiatives and ERP-related process evolution. Support development of scalable accounting practices appropriate for a growing organization.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, coach, and develop accounting team members through clear expectations, accountability, and mentorship. Directly manage the Senior Accountant, with broader accounting team leadership through the organizational structure. Foster a high-performance, collaborative, service-oriented accounting culture. Build strong working relationships across accounting, operations, payroll, HR, executive leadership, and external partners.

Expectations Section:

  • Travel: there may be opportunities to travel to other company offices and job sites across Virginia and North Carolina to collaborate with project teams and other departments, as well as to conferences and seminars for training and research.
  • Management: supervisory responsibilities for the Senior Accountant and broader accounting team leadership.
  • Physical: the employee may be required to sit and stand for long periods and must occasionally lift, move, or drag up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to navigate active construction sites safely.
  • Work Environment: Primarily office-based in Charlottesville, Virginia, with standard office equipment and computer use. May occasionally work in construction site trailers, requiring adaptability to varied environments. Comfortable working under deadlines in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Accounting degree preferred.
  • Experience: Progressive experience in accounting leadership roles with increasing responsibility. Experience in construction or project-based industries strongly preferred. Experience with monthly close, financial statement preparation, audit management, internal controls, and accounting operations leadership required. Experience leading AP, payroll oversight, treasury visibility, and accounting process management required.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), construction accounting software, and ERP systems. Experience supporting high-growth or operationally complex environments preferred. Demonstrated success improving processes, systems, or accounting workflows.
  • Knowledge and Compliance: Strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and financial reporting principles. Thorough understanding of construction accounting principles, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, and contract performance analysis. Knowledge of internal controls, audit processes, and tax compliance requirements.
  • Soft Skills: Highly accountable and detail-oriented without losing sight of the bigger picture. Systems-forward and naturally drawn to improving processes. Service-minded with a strong internal customer orientation. Comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment where priorities shift. Analytical, curious, and willing to ask thoughtful questions. Strong communicator able to engage effectively with field staff, operational leaders, executives, banks, auditors, and external partners. Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to receive and provide constructive feedback in a professional manner.
  • Certifications (preferred but not required): Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
