JOB DEFINITION:
This is three (3) hour position supervising students during lunch playground recess during the school day. Under supervision, the Educational Assistant will assist with supervision of students during non-instructional activities. The employee will supervise around and on the playground during lunch recess, provide a safe environment, problem-solve with students and administer first aid when necessary. The employee should have patience and a genuine appreciation of youth. The Educational Assistant works under the direction of a classroom teacher.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists with the general supervision of students outside the classroom during playground, lunch recess.
- Contributes to the student effectiveness by maintaining discipline on the playground.
- Supervises students during recess, may supervise during lunch periods, by keeping a safe and disciplined atmosphere on the playground, play area, and the cafeteria.
- Fulfills other related duties as assigned.
- Fulfills working conditions and physical effort listed below.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee works with small groups of students and on a one-to-one basis who may be physically or mentally disabled, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and/or culturally diverse. Supervision responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand for up to 30 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations where a student’s safety is being jeopardized. The supervision may also occur during times of inclement weather. The employee needs to be able to lift materials, boxes or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Skills and Abilities:
Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing in accordance with educational standards.
- Learn how to deal with bodily fluid spills.
- Understand and follow health protocols, as required by position.
- Adhere to the federal requirements for a drug-free workplace.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED. Medic First Aid card. Must enjoy working with students. Experience supervising groups of students in the cafeteria and during recess is desired. Dependable and punctual. Ability to problem-solve with students and work collaboratively with adults. Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships. The position requires general knowledge of some technical procedures or work activity. Working knowledge of a few school district practices or basic policies may be necessary.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
- Hold valid first aid/CPR card, as required for position.
- High school diploma or GED
- Employment contingent upon fingerprinting.
