The College is currently recruiting adjunct faculty to teach a First Year Experience course. Data shows that First-Year or Freshman experience courses can have a positive impact on students' academic and social integration into a college. These courses, therefore, result in increased student retention, improvements in GPA, reductions in course failure rates, improvements in student-faculty interaction, increases in support service utilization, and improvements in students' perceptions of their emotional well-being. It is classified as a high-impact practice. As a result, this course is now a graduation requirement for all first-time Freshman students entering the College.

FYE 101 THE FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE COURSE DESCRIPTION - This course is designed to assist new students in acclimating, connecting, and adjusting to the college campus and experience. Through presentations, discussions and group work, students will become familiar with college resources and learn strategies for academic success. Students will also be introduced to the values and ethical principles of the College and encouraged to reflect on their role/responsibilities as college students. Topics include time management, study skills, stress management, goal setting, course and career planning, self-assessment and awareness, and the development of wellness strategies.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop connections with peers and campus professionals at Farmingdale State College.
  • Identify various resources at Farmingdale State that support academic success.
  • Apply effective goal setting skills and determine what strategies are most effective for them as individual learners.
  • Employ time management skills to balance and manage their coursework across classes efficiently and effectively.
  • Implement effective study skills in their courses.
  • Employ techniques that reduce stress and increase healthy emotion regulation.
  • Explore identity, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice through an intersectional frame, becoming a respectful and responsible member of the FSC academic community.

This course employs a standard syllabus/curriculum. While faculty will have some latitude in development of lesson plans, it is critical that the basic curriculum content be followed.

Topics Include

Module 1: Introduction to College Skills, including: Goal setting, Study Skills, Time Management, and Course Planning

Module 2: Wellness, including: Emotional Intelligence,Growth Mindset, and Mindfulness

Module 3: Campus Services, including: Library, Student Life, Extracurriculars, Financial Literacy and Career Exploration

Module 4: Introduction to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice, including: Intersectionality, Recognizing and Valuing Differences

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in your field of study
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience
  • Availability to teach in-person (this course is not currently offered in a distance learning format)
  • Experience working within a college-related setting
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in your field of study
  • Experience teaching first-year seminar or similar student success courses
  • Knowledge of first-year student development theory and transition issues
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (i.e., Brightspace) and classroom technology
