Packaging/Shipping Supervisor
Overview:
Supervise and develop direct reports to establish and maintain acceptable standards of performance in the key factor’s areas of: Safety, Employee Relations, Quality, Sanitation/Product Protection, Costs, and Production.
Essential Functions:
- Executes good manufacturing practices while promoting a safe working environment and sanitary production techniques through the supervision of all phases of shipping.
- Conducts monthly/annual training to comply with regulatory needs
- Supervises the procurement for all shipping and packaging needs (i.e. Pallets, dunnage etc.)
- Reconciles daily inventory of posting finished product
- Practices basic principles of good people management to include but not limited to hiring and training of new hourly employees.
- Complies with high customer service requirements by working with them and sales in projecting the workload of the equipment and resources. Responds and takes corrective action related to customer complaints.
- Facilities requirements of regulatory agencies and external auditors
- Facilitates good communication by regularly informing management of significant operational issues, changes and recommendations
- Participates in food safety inspections
- Oversees the daily production scheduling for packaging/shipping. Release daily inventory/planning board cross checks of bags and other required food safety processes.
- Reconciles inventory of the Finished Goods warehouse and bag warehouse
- Supervises Finished Good employees
- Process and approve payroll
- Administers the export ordering; seasonal workforce, bag procurement, and scheduling of any inspections required
- Comply and Maintain all Food Safety programs
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a moderate to high-speed packaging environment; manufacturing experience is a plus
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft programs and other technical software packages, as needed
- Participation/experience with auditors is preferred
- Strong knowledge of food sanitation, regulatory requirements, and Good Manufacturing Practices highly desirable
- Hands-on experience with lean manufacturing concepts preferred
Communication skills: Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
Mathematical skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers of common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.
Critical thinking skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram formats.
Supervision received: Under direction where a definite objective is set up and the employee plans and arranges own work, referring only unusual cases to supervisor.
Planning: Responsibility for general assignments in planning, time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work, may also occasionally assist in
Use of machines, equipment and/or computers: Regular use of complex machines and equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software, road and production machines and equipment, etc.)
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, SDS, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals, must have good grammar and ability to write routine reports.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to calculate percentages and volume.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral or diagram form, ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have, or have the ability to obtain a forklift operator's license. Current valid California Driver’s License required. Must be insurable and have clean Motor Vehicle Report. Certificate of insurance required when using personal vehicle for company business.
Schedule: Full-time position, typically 40 hours a week, but on occasion additional hours may be required. Variable shift assignments as needed to fulfill the facility’s production requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Work is performed in a high dust environment. Workers must often work in tight, confined claustrophobic spaces. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold and heat.
