What are the responsibilities and job description for the EHS Director position at Farmers Cooperative Society?
The EHS Director is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of comprehensive Environmental, Health and safety across the cooperative. This role ensures regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and operational excellence through proactive and robust safety initiatives.
Essential Job Functions:
Lead the cooperative-wide safety strategy, ensuring compliance with OSHA, DOT, and other applicable safety regulations across all departments.
Conduct facility and equipment safety audits at grain elevators, feed mills, agronomy sites, and lumber yard.
Oversee the delivery of employee safety training programs, equipment safety, hazard communication, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, respiratory protection, forklift operations, etc.
Monitor incident reporting and lead investigations, implementing corrective and preventative measures.
Maintain and review safety metrics and OSHA recordkeeping (300 logs etc.)
Coordinate third party certifications and internal quality audits.
Ensure cooperative compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations (EPA, State Department od Agriculture/Environment).
Monitor air emissions, stormwater, and waste disposal at applicable sites.
Maintains permits and documentation for hazardous materials and environmental inspections.
Serve as the cooperative’s primary advisor on safety and quality matters.
Lead, mentor and train safety staff.
Participate in strategic planning related to risk management, sustainability, and compliance goals.
Provide regular reports and recommendations to executive leadership and the board,
Competencies:
Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, FEMA, DOT and other relevant industry regulations.
Strong leadership, communication, and training skills.
Able to build relationships with site managers, team members, and external regulators.
Able to travel regularly to cooperative locations and work in field environments.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Agricultural Science, Environmental Health, Industrial Management, or related field.
Minimum 5 years of safety with strong exposure to grain handling, feed manufacturing, and agronomy operations.
Management or supervisory experience preferred
Certifications (Preferred or willing to obtain):
OSHA 30 for General Industry
DOT Hazmat, CPR, and Forklift Trainer Certification
Work Requirements:
This position is based in a fast-paced setting with a combination of office and outside work. Office equipment utilized will be a computer, phone, fax, copy machine and other standard office equipment. Outside work will occasionally be exposed to elements, loud noise, and agricultural equipment. PPE will be provided and must be worn per FCS safety policy. Travel between FCS locations will be required. Typical hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; weekend / holiday and evening hours as necessary.
While performing job functions the employee will be required to talk and hear most of the time. The employee will spend frequent intervals moving and sitting, while also needing to reach, bend, twist, crawl, crouch, stoop or kneel. The employee will need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently. The physicality of this job is medium.
