SUMMARY:

Underwrite a profitable and growing book of business within your assigned territory with acceptable loss and expense ratios, while creating a value-added experience that builds trust, loyalty, and peace of mind for our customers.  Support corporate goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Conduct on-site inspections of risks to gather necessary underwriting information and evaluate exposures.
  • Collaborate with company partners in order to facilitate new business growth.
  • Evaluate risks for acceptance, renewal, modification, or declination within established departmental underwriting criteria and individual authority documents to produce an underwriting profit.
    • Analyze underwriting information such as applications, change requests, inspections, credit reports, MVR's, cost estimators.  Evaluate alternative outcomes, make appropriate underwriting decisions, and include proper and accurate file documentation.  The gauge of this duty will be underwriting audit scores and total profitability of written accounts over 3-5 yrs.
    • Answer questions from agents and other team members concerning risk analysis, eligibility, underwriting rules, rating, and company practices and procedures.
  • Evaluate the underwriting results of the assigned territory and make recommendations for corrective action, as necessary.  Participate as needed with feedback for Product Managers, evaluation of the agency force and development of underwriting guidelines.  The size of your territory, reflected by the total written premium, is indicative of the level of responsibility, underwriting capability, organizational skills and marketing skills demonstrated.
  • Communicate with agents in alignment with FAMI values:
    • Explain the reasons behind underwriting decisions.
    • Display flexibility and adaptability as risk conditions or market conditions change.
    • Be approachable and collaborative in all interactions.
    • Use persuasion and influencing skills to encourage new business submissions, business retention, and when recommending appropriate coverages.
    • Demonstrate trustworthiness and discipline.
    • Provide loss control services including risk avoidance mitigation measures.
  • Look up policy information on the computer and possess a working knowledge of systems and databases to facilitate in answering policy, coverage, and billing questions.
  • Participate in marketing efforts, including individual agency visits, company/agency meetings, and/or training sessions.
  • Overnight travel may be required.
  • Travel to the Home Office for training and meetings as required.
  • Complete special assignments and other duties as assigned

Qualifications


REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Must be coachable and learn from constructive criticism.
  • Develop a strong knowledge and understanding of the rating requirements and policy forms used within your underwriting responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate effective time management, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Good listening and decision-making skills, detail oriented, accurate and efficient.
  • Active participation in the team process, both internally and externally, and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business reports, company manuals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and provide timely response to questions from managers, customers, and the general public.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license & acceptable driving record.
  • Valid and active drone license and skill necessary to operate drone for farm inspections will be required within 6-12 months.

EDUCATION &/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Agriculture background preferred.
  • Two or more years of work experience in underwriting preferred
  • AINS designation along with a demonstrated desire to learn through the completion of other IIA or CPCU insurance courses.
  • Will be required to complete AFIS designation within 24 months.
  • CPCU completion is strongly encouraged
