Faribault County is seeking a skilled Shop Mechanic to keep our Public Works fleet safe, reliable, and ready for the road. In this role, you’ll diagnose and repair vehicles and heavy equipment, perform DOT inspections, complete preventive maintenance, and support shop operations through fabrication, welding, and parts coordination.
Shop Mechanic
What You’ll Do
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair county vehicles/equipment.
- Perform major repairs (e.g., transmissions, hydraulics, electronics, brakes, body work, alignments).
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance (lubrication, filters, belts, fluids, tires, etc.).
- Fabricate/weld parts to support shop and highway maintenance needs.
- Complete required DOT inspections on county equipment.
- Assist with ordering parts and supplies and maintaining inventory.
- Assist in hauling and/or snow plowing with tandems as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Bring

Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED and 1 year of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination.

Licenses: Valid MN driver’s license and Class A CDL (must obtain within 6 months of hire date).

Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of vehicle/heavy equipment diagnosis and repair; fabrication and welding experience.

Professional Skills: Clear communication (oral/written), ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and complete special projects independently and as part of a team.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Occasional outdoor work; exposure to extreme temperatures and hazardous materials may occur.

Frequent exposure to travel/hazard conditions typical of highway/shop environments.

Regular movement around the shop; climbing, pushing, and pulling required.

Ability to move up to 25 lbs and lift/move up to 60 lbs on occasion.

Operates and works around a variety of equipment (dump trucks/tandems, loaders, graders, tractors, mowers, dozers, backhoes, skid steers, pickups; hoists, welders, diagnostic tools).
Pay & Benefits

Compensation: Grade 4- $28.50 to $38.83 USD/hour
