General Counsel

JOB FUNCTION:               

General Counsel will foresee and protect the company against legal risks while carrying out corporate strategic initiatives.  General Counsel is responsible for a broad range of legal matters, including but not limited to, employment issues, regulatory compliance, corporate policies, licensing, and general contracts.  This role will provide effective legal, technical and professional advice and recommendations to company executives and other members of the management team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide legal advice on legal matters pertaining to the company.
• Advise on contract status, legal risks and business terms of various deals.
• Negotiate, prepare, and execute agreements and other legal documents.
• Guide store management and executives on regulatory and compliance matters.
• Draft correspondences on behalf of the company.
• Research unique legal issues impacting the company.
• Maintain awareness of existing laws and identify legal trends that may impact the company’s business operations or its strategies.
• Perform pre-litigation work to minimize risks.
• Manage outside counsel to develop case strategy, litigation plans, case budget, and cost management.
• Determine when specialized outside counsel is needed and work to optimize results.
• Represent the company’s interests in resolving disputes with customers, suppliers, former employees and other third parties.
• Provide training on substantive legal topics when necessary.
• Work cooperatively with various departments.
• Manage various projects and deadlines.
• Ensure legal objectives are met.
• Other duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree
• D. Degree from an ABA Accredited Law School
• At least 6 years related work experience
• Licensed to practice law in Iowa
• Experience in the following areas of discipline a must: employment law and general litigation
• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex issues to non-lawyers
• Strong organizational skills
• Strong problem solving skills
• Ability to take action as appropriate
• Ability to use Microsoft Word proficiently
• Retail or trade experience is beneficial

• This position will be based out of our Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa.
