Operations Engineering Co-Op

Ergon Refining, Inc. is seeking an Operations Engineering Co-Op to support refinery operations through the application of engineering principles, data analysis, and process evaluation. This position provides students with hands-on experience working within a refinery environment while contributing to initiatives focused on operational efficiency, reliability, safety, and continuous improvement.

The Operations Engineering Co-Op will work closely with the operations team and other cross-functional partners to analyze operational data, identify trends and opportunities for improvement, and support process optimization efforts. This role offers an opportunity to gain practical experience with refinery systems, operational workflows, project support, and data-driven decision-making.

Education & Minimum Qualifications

• Must have completed at least two semesters in an accredited engineering program, preferably Industrial Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
• Must be able to commit to the co-op position for three consecutive semesters.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is preferred.
• Exposure to analytical and visualization tools such as Minitab or Power BI is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with daily operational monitoring activities, including inventory reconciliation.
• Support shift operations by analyzing data from refinery process units.
• Collect, organize, clean, and analyze data related to key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Identify and evaluate trends or anomalies related to production, energy consumption, maintenance, and other operational activities.
• Prepare recurring reports, dashboards, and other materials for management review.
• Use tools such as Excel, Minitab, Power BI, or similar applications to analyze data and communicate findings.
• Participate in or lead small continuous improvement projects focused on areas such as reducing downtime, optimizing inventory, or improving operator workflows.
• Assist with the development of project documentation, including process flow diagrams, root cause analyses, reports, and presentations.
• Support capital projects through data gathering, project planning, cost analysis, and other project-related activities.
• Collaborate with operations and other functional teams to identify opportunities to improve refinery efficiency, reliability, and safety.
• Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
