The Shelter Advocate is responsible for screening potential clients for shelter acceptance in accordance with agency guidelines and completing all required intake documentation upon acceptance. This role provides orientation to new resident survivors and helps coordinate access to counseling services as needed. The Shelter Advocate maintains accurate daily documentation, client statistics, and shelter logs while ensuring all shelter rules are followed and a safe, supportive environment is upheld.
In this role, you will assist callers in locating safe shelter when capacity is full, answer and screen incoming calls including crisis line calls, and provide basic first aid when necessary. Responsibilities also include supporting daily shelter operations such as supervising meals, assisting with resident chore schedules, ensuring cleanliness, and monitoring common areas including the playground. You will also be responsible for the safe storage and distribution of medications.
The Shelter Advocate provides intake, referral services, and short-term counseling to support survivors in making meaningful life changes, while advocating on their behalf to access community resources such as housing, employment, and medical services. This position also involves developing community partnerships, attending meetings as needed, and completing administrative duties as assigned.
