What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highly Qualified Math Teacher, South County Academy position at FAMILY SERVICE OF RHODE ISLAND INC?
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for delivering engaging mathematics instruction focused on problem solving skills, mathematic reasoning and real world application to high school students with significant emotional/behavioral needs in a clinical residential school setting. Develop and monitor student Individual Education Programs (IEP) in accordance with Department of Education regulations and standards. Works collaboratively with the management team to ensure safety, stability and professional guidance to students in our care that have been placed through the Department of Children, Youth and Families. This is a full-time, year-round position.
SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop content specific lesson plans in accordance with established curriculum and Department of Education Grade Span Expectations and Grade Level Expectations
- Teach academic courses as assigned, in correlation with written lesson plans
- Develop and monitor appropriate academic goals and short-term objectives for student's Individual Educational Programs (IEP)
- Supports the students’ social, emotional, and academic growth by differentiating lessons and assessments based on the individual needs for each student
- Maintain a daily grade/participation record and report academic progress quarterly in a manner consistent with standards
- Attend and participate in daily multidisciplinary team meetings (debrief) and weekly staff meetings
- Active participation and consultation to the youth’s treatment team, both internally and externally including their families and natural supports
- Work as part of a team to support the overall functioning of the program and ensure that all Policies and Procedures are followed
- Encourage positive environment and behavioral support by utilizing a restorative justice framework and principles
- Become trained, competent and able to perform emergency de-escalation and support strategies when applicable
- Teach client/family self-advocacy skills
- Build and maintain positive, working relationships with community organizations and service providers
- Maintain confidentiality of client/family
- Transport client and family as needed
- Provide sensitivity to client/family cultural, ethnic, racial and socioeconomic issues and diversity
- Serve as a positive role model to client and colleagues
- Complete all professional and administrative documentation and forms in accordance with agency standards and within established guidelines and timeframes
- Maintains compliance with FSRI policies, including those relating to HIPAA and all state and federal agencies, including DCYF
- Proficient in using an electronic health record as well as project-specific software
- Participates in all meetings as required by the team, supervisors and that are necessary for the role both internally and externally
- Attend and participate in all required program and agency trainings
- Approaches all work through a trauma and diversity and inclusion lens
- Performs additional responsibilities consistent with Agency needs, defined in consultation with supervisor(s)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors Degree in Teaching or Education
- RI certification as Teacher of regular or special education
- Knowledge base around subject matter i.e Art, Phys Ed, Science, Math, English, History
- Experience with children with behavioral/psychiatric challenges
- Skilled in operating various medical record software and hardware, word-processing, and database software programs
- Spanish Speaking preferred and is compensated
- Excellent multitasking and communication skills a must
- Ability to work independently and part of a team
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires community visits, employees in this position must have the ability to:
- Current driver’s license, reliable transportation, registration and auto insurance
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Travel to and from community locations and office site, which could include using walkways, stairs and/or elevators
- Ability to lift up to 20lbs
- Provide emergency coverage; ratio to the programs as needed.
- Ability to be trained in and implement de-escalation techniques utilizing Handle with Care when necessary.
