Sterilization Technician

Position Summary

The Sterilization Technician is responsible for ensuring all dental instruments, equipment, and treatment areas are properly cleaned, disinfected, sterilized, and maintained in compliance with OSHA, CDC, and organizational protocols. This position supports the dental team's efficiency by preparing operatories, processing instruments, managing sterilization workflows, and maintaining adequate supply inventory.

Duties / Responsibilities

• Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes all dental instruments following established guidelines and infection control standards.
• Operates, maintains, and monitors sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners.
• Tracks instrument flow and ensures timely turnaround of clean/sterile instruments for provider use.
• Prepares and sets up dental operatories with required instruments and supplies.
• Follows proper biological monitoring procedures and documents sterilization tests.
• Maintains sterilization logs and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Assists dental staff with instrument organization and supply restocking.
• Monitors inventory of sterilization supplies/sundries and notifies supervisors of needed orders.
• Properly disposes of biohazardous materials following infection control policies.
• Ensures cleanliness and organization of the sterilization area at all times.
• Supports the organization as needed.
• Performs other duties as requested.

Required Skills / Abilities

• Knowledge of infection control standards, sterilization procedures, and universal precautions.
• Ability to operate sterilization equipment safely and effectively.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict protocols.
• Good organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with dental staff.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Typical Physical Demands / Work Environment

Occasional standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, and stooping. Talking, typing, listening, seeing/observing. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer, telephone, and other office equipment. Indoors, environmentally controlled. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Sedentary to light work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary to light work involves sitting approximately 75% of the time. Also involves exerting up to 25 pounds of force intermittently or up to 50 pounds of force infrequently.
