Reports To: Dental Supervisor

Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Location:  Cedar City, UT

Compensation: $20.40 T0 $21.84 per hour depending on experience and with certification 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


Benefits: 401K available on the 1st day of hire for Full and Part time employees, Family Healthcare will match dollar for dollar up to 3% and .50 cents on the dollar for the next 2% up to 5% of yearly earnings.

Profit Sharing: Full and Part time employees are eligible for up to 5% of yearly earnings after working with Family Healthcare for 6 months consecutively.

Employee Assistance Program for counseling and other services.


Required Vaccines and Tests, Influenza, Tdap, Hep B, MMR, Varicella, Negative TB and Drug Test results.

Additional Vaccines may be required.


Summary

The Dental Assistant will be responsible for general clinic administrative work and maintenance, as well as completing lab work under the direction of the dentist. The Dental Assistant’s primary responsibility is to prepare the examination rooms for appointments by sterilizing instruments and ensuring all necessary equipment is ready for the dentist. They also assist the dentist during their procedures by handing them instruments and anticipating their needs throughout the appointment. The Dental Assistant may also be responsible for greeting patients as they arrive, submitting billing details to the insurance company and scheduling the patient’s next appointment before they leave the clinic. The Dental Assistant is required to perform duties as outlined in this job description.


Pay is based upon demonstrated and verifiable experience. Resumes and valid professional references must be provided to verify skill and experience level.

BASE RATE Level I: $20.40 per hour/ $21.43 per hour for Certified 

Eligibility: To be eligible for Dental Assistant I one must have at least 1 years of general Dental Assistant experience consistent with the job duties.

BASE RATE Level II: $21.85 per hour

To be eligible for Dental Assistant II one must have at least 2 years of general Dental Assistant experience consistent with the job duties.

BASE RATE Level III: $23.25 per hour

To be eligible for Dental Assistant III one must have at least 2 years of general Dental Assistant experience consistent with the job duties.

BASE RATE Level IV: $23.96 per hour

To be eligible for Dental Assistant IV one must have at least 4 years of general Dental Assistant experience including supervisory role and consistent with the job duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Level I): The essential duties and responsibilities (for all levels) include, but are not limited to:

General Duties Overview

  • Update and maintain client’s dental records
  • Perform routine dental cleanings and assist the dentist with complex dental procedures
  • Take and process X-rays of patients
  • Schedule patient appointments
  • Take billing and insurance details from patients
  • Advise patients on recommended oral hygiene

Preparation and Documentation

  • Prepare dental charts
  • Participate in Pre-Visit Planning
  • Update the Electronic Health Record (EHR) timely.
  • Gather patient information and updates patient information, vitals, and medications in the EHR.
  • Add correct CPT codes and complete codes corrections within 3 days.
  • Review assigned charts timely.
  • Document all treatment records in the patient chart completely and in a timely manner.
  • Keep needed products and supplies stocked.
  • Document use of supplies when used (inventory control management).
  • Scan all reports, correspondence, x-ray reports and other pertinent information timely and appropriately.
  • Conduct Prior Authorizations.

Lab and X-Ray

  • Follow all safety protocols (CLIA, OSHA, etc.) in the performance of all labs and other applicable procedures.
  • Check lab reports daily to ensure that all reports have been received and followed up on appropriately.
  • Exposes dental diagnostic x-rays.

Safety and Compliance

  • Maintain patient confidentiality in all aspects of the daily duties as well as during time when not at work.
  • Keep all certifications current as relevant.
  • Follow all policies and procedures.

Quality Assurance/Improvement

  • Participate in Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance plan to continuously improve quality.
  • Conduct monthly quality control checks as directed by supervisor.
  • Ensure no medications or supplies are given that are expired.
  • Ensure that all patients receive optimal care.
  • Complete all required quality assurance / quality improvement tasks.

Clinical

  • Prepares patient, sterilizes, and disinfects instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials, and assists dentist during dental procedures.
  • Assists dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.
  • Conduct all appropriate screening processes.
  • Cleans teeth and applies protective coating of fluoride to teeth as appropriate.

Scheduling

  • Assures access to care.
  • Schedules follow up appointments.
  • Works to ensure patients are seen in a timely way through coordination with other members of Family Healthcare.
  • Conduct follow-up calls with patients who no-show as needed.

Communication

  • Respond to “bubbles”, timely.
  • Answer telephone and respond to voicemail at least daily.
  • Greet patients and answer telephone in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Provide patients with needed information including but not limited to provider’s orders and medication information for samples.
  • Provides postoperative instructions prescribed by Dentist.
  • Instructs patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.

Infection Control

  • Maintain highest standards of infection control and cleanliness including cleaning exam rooms per infection control procedures.
  • Follows cleaning instructions posted in each dental clinical area.
  • Sterilize used instruments through proper sterilization procedures.
  • Follows all infection control policies and procedures.

Teamwork

  • Maintains smooth patient flow through open communication and coordination with others.
  • Assist others as needed or requested.

Level II

Be able to perform all of Level I duties proficiently and additional perform additional duties below:

  • Cross Trained in all Front Desk Duties (scheduling, planning, communication, customer service).
  • Routinely (per manufacturer instructions) check all equipment to ensure proper working order.
  • Perform autoclave procedures and keep instruments clean, diligently sterilized, orderly, and ensure patient rooms are consistently clean and safe.
  • Accountable for weekly and monthly quality control of machines.
  • Notifies supervisor if any attention is needed on machines, supplies, lab equipment etc.
  • Perform financial planning with patients for procedures.
  • Order, track, maintain, document and quality control supplies and equipment.
  • Problem solve immediate safety, risk, complaints, equipment issues, issues, concerns, and document and notify supervisor of issues.
  • Handle biohazard removal/disposal appropriately and safely.
  • Assist other teams as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Level III

Be able to perform all of Level I, and II duties proficiently and additional perform additional duties below:

  • Provide Dental Assistant Training – verify competencies and train other Dental Assistants.
  • Maintain highest level of competency on all duties of Dental Assistants in regard to procedures authorized by Dentists and Dental Assistants.
  • Conduct daily walk through of facility with checklist (safety) and corrects issues and notify supervisor – of issues/concerns immediately.
  • Address patient complaints immediately (after completing customer service and compliance training), document properly and work on process improvement and communication to quality assurance.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems, coordinating with suppliers and vendors.
  • Notify supervisor of any staffing shortages or facility concerns. Be point of contact if supervisor is off site.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Level IV

Be able to perform all of Level I, II and III duties proficiently and additional perform additional duties below:

  • Responsible to supervise other Dental Assistants including coordinating with Dentist / Dental Director and other management hiring, termination, supervision, staffing levels, and performance evaluations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications - Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma and minimum qualifications as outlined per level (verified).
  • Current Dental Assistant Certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Excellent familiarity with dental office routine and terminology.
  • Qualified in Basic Life Support Techniques.
  • Ability to work well as a team, exhibit integrity, use good judgment and keep confidential information.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality consistently.
  • Pass Dental Assistant basic competency within first 90 days and annually.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment is a typical medical office setting with appropriate climate controls. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This is an OSHA high-risk position.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk; and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
