What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant (Pediatrics) position at Family Health Source Medical Centers?
Please note: This role is mainly in Pediatrics, but experience in adult care is also required, as you may occasionally work alongside a Primary Care provider. Some travel may be needed.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Greet and room patients, verify identity, and obtain vital signs (height, weight, BP, temperature, pulse, respiration, BMI).
- Accurately document patient medical history, medication lists, allergies, and chief complaints in the Electronic Medical Record.
- Prepare exam rooms and assist providers with physical exams, and minor procedures.
- Administer vaccines and medications via oral, IM, subcutaneous, and intradermal routes according to protocols.
- Perform venipuncture for lab draws when necessary
- Perform point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose, HbA1c, rapid strep, lead screening, respiratory illness screening, urine dipstick, pregnancy tests).
- Conduct vision and hearing screenings as appropriate for age.
- Perform EKGs, spirometry, and basic wound care when ordered.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR.
Pediatric-Specific Duties:
- Plot height, weight, and head circumference on standardized growth charts.
- Administer and document immunizations per CDC pediatric schedule and Providers advisement.
- Assist with developmental screenings and coordinate authorizations for referrals.
- Provide guidance education to parents and caregivers.
- Support comfort and safe positioning of infants and children during exams.
- Retrieve and update state immunization records.
Adult-Specific Duties:
- Assist in chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, asthma).
- Administer adult vaccines (e.g., flu, Tdap, etc.).
- Conduct routine screenings (PHQ-9, tobacco use, etc.)
- Support preventive care efforts and health education.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Schedule follow-up appointments and manage recall/reminder calls.
- Obtain referral authorizations, when necessary, assist to obtain lab results, imaging results, and specialist consultations when necessary.
- Process medication refill requests per clinic policy.
- Ensure timely documentation and completion of prior authorizations.
- Participate in team meetings and quality improvement projects.
- Monitor and stock exam rooms and medical supply inventory.
- Ensure exam room cleanliness and infection control compliance.
Education & Certification:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant training program required.
- Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or NCMA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred but not necessary.
Experience:
- Experience in outpatient primary care or FQHC setting preferred.
- Experience with both pediatric and adult populations is required.
- EMR proficiency in eClinicalWorks strongly preferred.
- Bilingual (e.g., Spanish, Haitian Creole, etc.) is a plus.
