JOB SUMMARY

The Dentist – Pediatrics is a specialist responsible for providing comprehensive oral health care to children from infancy through adolescence.  This individual delivers general pediatric dental treatment and addresses a wide range of oral health concerns specific to children, including prevention, diagnosis, and management of dental conditions.  The Pediatric Dentist ensures care is delivered in accordance with clinical standards, while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and organizational guidelines.  Additionally, this role collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to support integrated patient care, participates in oral health education and outreach efforts, and contributes to departmental initiatives that align with organizational goals.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs comprehensive oral evaluations for pediatric patients utilizing diagnostic tools such as radiographs, periodontal charting, and dental impressions to assess oral health.
  2. Serves as a clinical resource for specialty referrals, ensuring appropriate coordination of care for complex cases.
  3. Accurately documents and charts extraoral and intraoral hard and soft tissue findings in accordance with clinical standards.
  4. Provides comprehensive dental care to pediatric patients, including those with complex medical conditions, following evidence-based clinical protocols.
  5. Develops, discusses, and finalizes individualized treatment plans with patients and their caregivers to support informed decision-making.
  6. Performs a variety of dental procedures including tooth extractions, root canals, cavities removal, tooth preparation, and placement of restorative materials such as amalgam and composite.
  7. Restores teeth affected by decay through appropriate restorative techniques, including fillings, in alignment with agreed-upon treatment plans.
  8. Diagnoses and treats oral pathological conditions, prescribes medications as needed, administers local anesthesia, and obtains dental radiographs to support treatment.
  9. Designs and fabricates dental appliances, including fixed and removable prosthetics and minor orthodontic devices, based on patient needs.
  10. Provides patient and caregiver education on oral hygiene practices and preventive dental care to promote long-term oral health.
  11. Completes clinical documentation in a timely and accurate manner to ensure comprehensive and up-to-date patient records.
  12. Trains and supports dental team members in clinical practices and protocols to ensure consistent, high-quality care delivery.
  13. Provides emergency dental care and performs urgent procedures to manage pain and stabilize conditions.
  14. Delivers care in compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines to ensure safety and regulatory adherence.
  15. Acts as a clinical leader and role model within the dental team, fostering a positive work environment and embracing organizational change initiatives.
  16. Administers conscious sedation in accordance with licensure and clinical standards to facilitate treatment in appropriate cases.
  17. Collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare providers to support comprehensive, coordinated care for pediatric patients.
  18. Supervises and mentor’s dental student externs, providing instruction and oversight in the delivery of pediatric dental care.
  19. Maintains strict adherence to scheduled work hours with regular and reliable attendance.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) with completion of a two-year pediatric dentistry residency.
  2. Preferred experience in a pediatric dental clinical setting.

 

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES

  1. Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain a valid, unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of Wisconsin.
  2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at time of hire, or within three months of employment.
  3. Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required with an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR), per FHC guidelines.
