Job Summary:
The Custodian is responsible for ensuring clean, safe, functional facilities by performing cleaning and maintenance activities as well as some repairs when professional licensure is not required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
The Custodians responsibilities chiefly falls within the following core functions, although he/she may perform other tasks as needed:
· Cleans facilities on a daily basis and ensures that assigned facilities are sanitized and free of hazards. Cleans classrooms, hallways, floors, bathrooms, offices, entrances, etc.
· Performs routine maintenance such as replacing light bulbs and maintaining center equipment used in the course of work.
· Reports safety, sanitation, and fire hazards to supervisor (COC) in charge of center facilities.
· Performs routine maintenance of buildings and grounds and more often, as needed.
· Performs outdoor tasks such as sweeping steps, porches and drives, ensuring and maintaining parking lot is free of debris, raking mulch on playground areas, etc.
· Displays and maintains cooperative relationships with Family Guidance Center Head Start/Early Head Start Staff, children and families.
· Participates in job related meetings, events and training as requested.
· Takes precautions to protect own health and safety as well as the health and safety of children, families, and staff. Takes precaution to protect center equipment and facilities.
· Expected to be knowledgeable of the regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.
· Responsible for understanding Head Start Performance Standards and the Department of Human Resources Minimum Standards for Day Care Centers licensing regulations in order to ensure quality services for the children, families and staff.

Requirements:
· A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
· Physical exam and background checks are required for this position.
· Travel required locally or long-distance up to 10% of the time for work-related meetings and functions.
· Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
· May be required to operate a program vehicle during the course of duties and must have an
acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
· Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
· Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
· Bilingual a plus.
· Knowledge of safe and thorough basic cleaning and sanitation practices.
· Must be honest, dependable and able to meet deadlines.
· Self-motivated and able to work independently.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to operate standard cleaning appliances such as vacuum cleaners and rug shampoo machines.
· Ability to stand, walk, and bend periodically.
· Ability to receive and respond to oral communication.
· Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Work Environment:
· Work is generally performed in a center environment including classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, offices, playgrounds etc.
· Noise level in the work environment is moderate to occasionally loud (examples: music, singing and staff and children’s voices).
