Clinical Pathology Technician

Fairview Health Services is looking for an Clinical Pathology Technician for the Acute Care Laboratory at University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank.  This is a fulltime opening on the night shift, 11pm-7am weekdays, 3 out of 6 weekends, occasional holidays.

The Acute Care Laboratory is an engaging work environment focused on patient safety and experience. The duties include specimen handling, receiving, processing (centrifugation and aliquoting of patient samples), managing sample accountability, and answering nursing and provider questions.

The University of Minnesota Medical Center Acute Laboratories perform clinical hematology, chemistry, blood gas, coagulation, urinalysis, transfusion medicine, and blood collection and processing. The East Core Laboratory cares for critical adult inpatients and serves as a central receiving laboratory for specialty laboratories. The East Core team consists of 160 employees.

The Clinical Pathology Technician (APT) performs all work processes necessary for the preparation or procurement and transport of specimens used for waived, moderate, or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA'88. The CPT possesses knowledge of all departments within the clinical laboratory (Chemistry, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Hematology, Coagulation, and Microbiology), performs routine and specialty procedures, recognizes problems, identifies basic causes, and makes corrections using established protocols. The CPT processes data based on knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting diagnostic test results and performs procedures within established parameters. The CPT collaborates with the customers of the laboratory to promote customer satisfaction and works independently under general supervision.

Job Expectations includes:

• Specimen Procurement and Processing
• Follows established guidelines and procedures to accession/order or enter specimens/tests into the computer system
• Performs all work processes necessary to produce specimens used for waived, moderate, or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA'88.
• Recognizes problems and takes appropriate measures to resolve them.
• Evaluates diagnostic preparations for quality and initiates interventions as needed.
• Complies with Laboratory Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Compliance Programs
• Other duties as assigned.

Required

Education

• 24 credits of college coursework with at least 12 credits in chemistry or biological sciences OR
• 24 credits of college coursework plus 2 years of clinical laboratory experience.

Additional Requirements:

Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred. Demonstrates the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations. Ability to exercise independent judgment. Demonstrate manual dexterity. Basic computer and keyboarding skills.

• BS degree in biological sciences or Medical Assistant degree

Experience

• 1-2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory
