Position Function
This is an important grounds maintenance position involving the upkeep of lawns, turfgrass, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, sidewalks, driveways, and building exteriors. The employee may operate motorized grounds equipment or light-duty trucks in maintaining grounds and hauling materials and refuse. Work involves manual labor and is performed under various weather conditions, including extremes of heat and cold, humidity, and other inclement conditions.
The Grounds Equipment Operator works under general supervision and reports directly to a higher-ranking employee. Performs related duties as required.
Typical Work Activities
(Other related duties may be assigned.)
Good knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures and practices; good knowledge of hand tools and power equipment; working knowledge of plant care and basic landscaping; ability to safely operate hand, power, and motorized grounds equipment; ability to perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; ability to properly care for and store tools and equipment; ability to follow and give simple oral and written instructions; ability to lift, carry, push, and handle equipment, tools, supplies, and debris; willingness to perform manual labor; willingness to work independently; mechanical aptitude; endurance; and the ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including lifting, standing, and other physical activities, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications
There are no education or experience qualifications for this position. Non-competitive Civil Service position. Must submit a Civil Service Application (no exam required).
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Class *D* Operator's license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.

- Mows lawns; trims and edges around walks, flowerbeds, walls, fences, hedges, trees, and shrubs
- Prunes trees and shrubs
- Plants, waters, and weeds grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs
- Rakes leaves and picks up brush and litter
- Plows or shovels snow and spreads salt on walkways, steps, driveways, and crossings
- Repairs and paints fences, gates, walks, walls, tables, benches, and guardrails
- Installs playground and athletic equipment; assists in building and maintaining athletic fields
- Cleans gutters, drainage ditches, culverts, and catch basins
- Operates hand tools, power tools, and equipment
- Operates light trucks to deliver supplies and remove debris; loads and unloads materials
- Operates tractors and small equipment for transport and general grounds work
- Performs minor preventive maintenance on grounds equipment and vehicles
- May mark, line, or lay out athletic fields
