Part-Time Groundskeeper

Fairless Local School District Reports to: Athletic Director & Director of Facilities

Employment Status: Part-Time, Classified Position

Summary: The Groundskeeper is responsible for the care, maintenance, and improvement of all district grounds, athletic fields, walkways, parking lots, and outdoor facilities. This position ensures that the grounds are safe, clean, and visually appealing for students, staff, and the community.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities

? Perform routine grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, edging, leaf removal, mulching, weeding, and planting.

? Do a daily check of district property. Make sure exterior trash bins are emptied. Clean up any debris and litter, report any safety concerns.

? Maintain athletic fields, including mowing patterns, field lining, infield conditioning, turf repair, aeration, fertilization, and top dressing.

? Operate and ensure district equipment such as tractors, mowers, string trimmers, blowers, plows, and utility vehicles are cared for and maintenance issues communicated.

? Assist with snow and ice removal on sidewalks, entryways, driveways, and parking lots using plows, snow blowers, and salt spreaders. Clean up salt after a weather event.

? Inspect grounds for safety hazards, drainage issues, damaged equipment, and potential maintenance needs; report findings to supervisor.

? Maintain landscaping beds, trees, shrubs, and district green spaces. 

? Assist with minor maintenance tasks such as fence repair, sign installation, and playground upkeep.

? Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides in accordance with licensing requirements and safety protocols (if certified).

? Prepare grounds and outdoor spaces for school events, athletic contests, community events, and seasonal needs.

? Maintain accurate logs for equipment usage, maintenance schedules, and supply inventories.

? Ensure proper storage, cleaning, and care of all groundskeeping tools and machinery.

? Follow all district safety procedures, including OSHA requirements, bloodborne pathogen protocols, and equipment safety practices.

? Work collaboratively with custodial and maintenance staff to support district operations.

? During inclement times - interior custodial work may be assigned; such as gymnasiums, weight room, and other areas not on a daily custodians schedule.

? Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

? High school diploma or GED.

? Valid Ohio driver's license.

? Ability to operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely.

? Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, perform outdoor labor in varying weather conditions, and meet job demands.

? Strong attendance, reliability, and work ethic. Preferred:

? Prior experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or turf management.

? Experience with athletic field maintenance.

? Pesticide & Herbicide Applicator License (or willingness to obtain).

? Mechanical aptitude for minor equipment repairs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

? Knowledge of landscaping practices, turf care, and seasonal grounds maintenance.

? Ability to safely and effectively operate various machinery and tools.

? Understanding of snow and ice removal procedures.

? Strong communication and teamwork skills.

? Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently. Commitment to safety and risk prevention.

Work Environment

? Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions including heat, cold, snow, and rain.

? Regular physical labor including bending, lifting, walking, and operating machinery. Use of power tools, hand tools, and district vehicles.

Evaluation Performance will be evaluated by the Athletic Director in collaboration with the Director of Transportation and Facilities in accordance with district policy for classified employees.
