What are the responsibilities and job description for the Motor Equipment Operator position at Fairfax County?
Reports to the maintenance facility at 6100 Clifton Road, Clifton, VA. Under supervision, performs a broad range of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to turf grass and equipment maintenance. Operates, various types of reel and rotary mowers, skid-steer and utility tractors with attachments, turf aerators, spreaders, boom sprayers, gas powered hand tools, utility vehicles and pick-up truck with trailer. Duties will include, but are not limited to: Mowing, applying fertilizers, pesticides, and soil conditioners, pruning, leaf and debris removal, hand watering turf and assisting with preventive maintenance of equipment. Assists with training employees in safe operation of equipment. Operates a pick-up truck and trailer over roads to transport equipment and materials to other park facilities. Assists mechanic with preventive maintenance. Oil changes, belts, tires, sharpening rotary mower blades. Assists with rebuilding, resurfacing and reinstalling reel mowing units. Completes required documentation for equipment repairs in the WOM system. - Operates load luggers and septic tank trucks, and may use specialized equipment on each;
- Operates road rollers to compact subgrades, sub-bases, shoulder materials, and embankment areas;
- Operates single-axle dump trucks and small trailers in the loading, unloading, and transportation of small motor equipment;
- Operates various small equipment such as tampers, chain saws, concrete saws, etc.;
- Drives a refuse collection truck, overseeing crew members, checking truck for proper operating condition, and making minor repairs;
- Performs maintenance on medium/small equipment and vehicles (such as checking and adding fuel, water, oil and air; checking the brakes and cleaning vehicles);
- May perform a variety of laborer tasks, such as digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting, brush removal, asphalt leveling and raking, lifting, pushing, and other physical work;
- Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are followed when working near equipment;
- Reads and interprets engineering plans for utility location prior to excavation;
- May lead a small crew of laborers;
- Effectively communicates with employees, supervisors and customers;
- Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
- Reports unsafe working conditions;
- Complies with safety competencies.
- Working knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations;
- Working knowledge of general maintenance of light motorized equipment;
- Working knowledge of computers:
- Skill in the operation of gasoline-powered construction, maintenance, or refuse collection equipment;
- Ability to perform light maintenance on this equipment;
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions;

- Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions;
- Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc.;
- Ability to maintain effective relationship with customers, employees and supervisors;
- Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
- Ability to lead the work of others.
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to:
Completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Driver's License (Required)
- Registered Technician (Required upon hire)
- Certified Fertilizer Applicator License (Required within 12 months)
- Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License (Required within 12 months)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three years of experience in golf course maintenance.
- Experience with rebuilding, resurfacing and reinstalling reel mowing units.
- Experience calibrating spreaders and boom type sprayers.
- Virginia fertilizer applicators certificate or state with reciprocity.
- Virginia Commercial Applicators Certificate for turf or state with reciprocity. Category 3B.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50 pounds up to 75 pounds with assistance. Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment and truck trailer
Ability to use hand/power tools. Ability to wear respirator and other personal protective equipment and clothing. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
