BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform a variety of maintenance and repair tasks on parks and recreation facilities and equipment to keep them in an attractive, functional, and safe condition.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
1. Operate a variety of equipment to include loaders, tractors, trucks, zamboni, bobcat, snow blower, mowers, plow trucks, and other miscellaneous equipment. Provide routine and preventative equipment maintenance.
2. Construct and maintain ice rinks, ball field layout, ski trail layout, and perform maintenance and upkeep tasks.
3. Construct, repair, and maintain dugouts, backstops, fences, bleachers, picnic tables, signs and rink boards, and other wooden structures/products.
4. Use power tools and equipment to repair turf, mow grass, fertilize, re-seed, cut weeds, clear brush, maintain underground watering system, remove snow, and sweep sidewalks and parking lots.
5. Use hand tools to dig, grade, clear, spread, and tamp soil.
6. Perform conversion support for special events.
7. Plant seeds and bulbs, fertilize, prune, and water park and garden areas.
8. Empty trash barrels, pick up litter, and perform janitorial duties.
9. Load, unload, and store materials, equipment, and supplies.
10. Supervise and direct work of casual labor crews during summer season. Instruct seasonal employees in the proper and safe operation of equipment/tools and operator maintenance and inspection procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent. Three years previous experience involving construction, general repair and upkeep of facilities/equipment, custodial and/or grounds maintenance using hand and power tools; up to one year vocational training in a related field preferred.
2. Mechanical experience performing routine maintenance on different types of equipment.
3. Experience performing routine labor tasks in extreme weather conditions.
4. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid, Adult CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications, as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent) within six (6) months of hire. (APPLICANTS WHO HOLD A CURRENT CERTIFICATION MUST PROVIDE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATION AT THE TIME OF INTERVIEW.)
5. Experience operating a variety of motorized tools and implements and light to heavy duty equipment (tractors, mowers, end loaders, etc.).
6. Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST)
7. Must be willing to work a variety of assigned shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

1. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to work independently, displaying initiative and independent judgment.
2. Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and harmoniously with the general public, civic organizations, and special interest groups.

2. This position requires a criminal background investigation.

Frequent interdepartmental business contact; continuous routine public contact and frequent contact involving outside organizations/agencies.
JOB RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervisor responsibilities: directs work flow of permanent/temporary/seasonal/volunteers during summer months; experiences minor problems daily and occasional major ones that must be resolved on own initiative with little immediate supervision; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require significant effort to recover.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Shop area where conditions are pleasant; varied outdoor work sites with disagreeable conditions with undesirable elements or factors on a somewhat continuous basis; up to 3/4 of time is spent standing, or walking; major accident/hazard risk; requires sustained periods of heavy lifting, pushing or pulling (50 lbs.).
This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
