What are the responsibilities and job description for the Solid Waste Laborer position at Fairbanks North Star, Borough of (AK)?
This incumbent will work as a general laborer at the Transfer Sites, Recycling/Household Hazardous Waste Facility, and around the Solid Waste Facility as required, working individually or providing assistance to other staff. This position requires an individual who is mechanically inclined, safety conscious, self-motivated, hardworking, reliable, and who has the ability to communicate with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner.

REPORTS TO: Operations Supervisor
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None
SHIFT: 8am-5pm, schedule varies. Position is for the summer season, though September 30th. 1. Perform heavy manual work for extended periods, sometimes under adverse weather conditions, wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, with constant contact with recyclables, waste-to-energy fuels, and hazardous waste at the Transfer Sites and Recycling/Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
2. Assist operators; perform general laborer duties and landscaping at the Solid Waste Facility and Transfer Sites.
3. Perform clean-up, housekeeping, and janitorial duties around the Solid Waste Facility.
4. Operate light motorized equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of assigned grounds maintenance tasks.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
2. Demonstrate proficiency in the operation of hand and power tools.
3. Forty (40) hours of HazWOPER training preferred (attach a copy of certificate if available).
4. Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver’s license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Ability to perform work wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Ability to handle recyclables, waste-to-energy fuels, hazardous waste.
3. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and under a variety of weather conditions.
4. Ability to deal tactfully, courteously, and harmoniously with the general public and other Borough employees.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY:
Does not supervise; experiences mostly routine duties with a few minor problems; little immediate supervision is required, must use own initiative in handling most problems; the consequences of error, carelessness or mistaken judgment require normal effort to recover.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Solid waste environment where conditions are generally unpleasant with disagreeable conditions (heat, cold, dirt, noise, fumes, etc.) on a somewhat continuous basis where there is accident/hazard risk/fires; requires sustained periods of heavy lifting, bending, pushing or pulling (50 lbs.).
This position falls under the Borough’s Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
