Job Title: Director of Finance - FMS
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
Summary
The Director of Finance – Fairbanks Morse Systems (FMS) is a proactive, analytical, and solution-oriented professional dedicated to delivering impactful financial insights that enhance business performance. This role involves overseeing the preparation of short- and long-term financial plans, managing the monthly accounting close process, monitoring and analyzing budget performance, producing monthly forecasts, and effectively communicating results. The position is responsible for financial oversight and leads the Finance Controllers for two U.S. facilities, two European facilities and one Canadian facility.
In addition to financial expertise, the Director of Finance acts as a critical strategic business partner, supporting FMS President and Leadership teams across various areas such as business planning, pricing strategies, capital requests, and contract negotiations. By providing comprehensive financial analysis to identify and explain key business drivers, this individual plays a critical role in achieving the segment’s profitability, growth, and strategic objectives.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
Accumulate and report accurate and reliable information on the financial and operational performance of the segment.
Provide in-depth financial analysis to understand and explain segment drivers. Analyze revenues and expenses and present results and recommendations for improvement.
Develop and improve analytical and forecasting methodologies. Responsible for the financial planning model providing regular re-forecasts of plan using actuals, including capital planning.
Active participation in influencing segment growth, direction, and strategic planning including development and evaluation of business cases for potential strategic initiatives.
Work with segment leadership to develop and approve the financial portion of commercial proposals. This includes developing anticipated costs, profit margins, and cash flows. It also includes understanding the entire proposal to ensure both financial and business risks are understood and the price reflects the risks.
Ensure that all transactions are recorded to the general ledger accurately and timely and the appropriate cut off is established for the accounting period.
Support the entire segment in policy making and decisions aimed at increasing sales, enhancing productivity, and reducing cost.
Develop finance team members by recruiting, training and coaching employees. Leads by example, providing finance staff with informal and formal feedback for employee development.
Support the CFO, CAO and FMS President in financial matters including corporate reporting and operational reviews.
Prepare monthly forecast for P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow
Compile monthly Operating Report in support of quarter-over-quarter, year-over-year, and budget-to-actual analysis.
Lead in a manner that supports FMD’s values of velocity, teamwork, and integrity.
Support external and internal audit.
Maintain adequate internal controls over company assets and maintain written procedures to ensure adherence to management policies.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
MBA, CPA, or CMA preferred.
Minimum of five years of experience in a management position in finance/accounting.
Strong influencing skills with the ability to motivate and enlist cooperation within the organization.
Expertise in Excel and PowerPoint.
Must possess excellent communication skills - both written and oral.
Previous successful leadership and supervisory experience required.
Experience in Government Accounting standards and regulations is preferred.
Proficiency in use of an ERP computer software package required, preferably Oracle.
Travel up to 25%.
