A Controls Specialist (CS) is responsible for installation, commissioning, scheduled, and emergency service on products serviced by Fairbanks Morse Defense commensurate with appropriate certification.
The CS is required to establish, promote, and maintain excellent rapport with all customers, co-workers, sales representatives, and others as appropriate. The CS is also required to maintain continuous communication with Regional Offices and their direct manager.

Summary
A Controls Specialist (CS) is responsible for installation, commissioning, scheduled, and emergency service on products serviced by Fairbanks Morse Defense commensurate with appropriate certification.
The CS is required to establish, promote, and maintain excellent rapport with all customers, co-workers, sales representatives, and others as appropriate. The CS is also required to maintain continuous communication with Regional Offices and their direct manager.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Role
- Conduct installation, testing, and troubleshooting services for the control systems on FMD engine lines
- Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Diagnose problems and develop solutions for qualified engines
- Work independently on qualified engines
- May occasionally be assigned to shop duties such as general machining, part inspections, assembly, testing, and warehouse work
- Stay current on Engineering Change Orders, Field Service Change Notices, and Service Information Letters
- Document work performed on Service Reports and write Condition Found Reports
- Operate safely in accordance with published safety guidelines
- Wear appropriate PPE per company policies
- Report all work-related accidents or injuries immediately
- Complete annual safety training requirements per the regional safety schedule
- Provide accurate and timely reporting (timecards, expense reports, mileage, project closures, etc.)
- Obtain and maintain certification based on internal Service Progression Requirements
- Provide estimated time of arrival to the customer when applicable
- Maintain company property (vehicle, credit cards, PPE, test equipment, laptop, etc.)
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers
- Complete and provide maintenance documentation upon assignment completion
- Strive to provide all customers with a “first time fix”
- Maintain customer satisfaction rates according to company guidelines
- Maximize productivity by combining service opportunities
- Complete all work efficiently and on schedule
- Maintain productive utilization rate per company guidelines
- Follow company dress code and safety regulations
- Adhere to escalation processes and procedures
- Communicate effectively at all levels within the organization
- Serve as a role model and lead by example in all aspects of the job
- Conduct yourself with professionalism and high-quality service delivery
- Manage stressful customer situations with diplomacy

Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Prior FMD Associate Controls Specialist experience preferred
- One or more of the following required:
- Associate Degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, or Power Generation Technology with four years’ experience in a related field (including two years of electrical/motion controls experience), or
- Four years’ experience in a related field (including three years of electrical/motion controls experience)
- Knowledge of two- and four-stroke engine operating theory (preferred)
- Basic understanding of gas compression and related hazards (preferred)
- Understanding of electrical systems and associated hazards (required)
- Proficiency in using electrical test equipment, including:
- Multimeters
- Pressure calibrators
- Signal generators
- Process meters
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical line diagrams and blueprints
- Diagnose and repair electrical problems
- Working knowledge of pneumatic, PLC, and electronic engine controls, including:
- Electrical circuit diagnosis and meter usage for:
- VDC, 12VDC, 24VDC, 125VDC, 120VAC, 240VAC, 480VAC, 3 phase
- Allen Bradley PLC (RSLogix 500 and RSLogix 5000) or equivalent
- HMI programming (PanelBuilder 32, FactoryTalk View ME) or equivalent
- Automation system diagnosis and troubleshooting
- End devices for the following signal types:
- RTDs, Thermocouples, 4–20mA sensors, Relays/Solenoids, Magnetic pickups, Hall Effect proximity sensors, and related cabling/terminals
- Experience with standby generator and engine operation and maintenance
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Valid driver’s license and eligibility for company credit card
- Travel required up to 75% (domestic and international, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergency travel on short notice)
- Must hold a valid U.S. Passport or be able to obtain one within 3 months of hire
- Must meet NOFORN requirements for access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information — proof of U.S. Citizenship required (U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, or Naturalization Certificate)
