Fairbanks Morse Defense
Thomaston, CT Full Time
POSTED ON 11/19/2025 CLOSED ON 12/16/2025

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Computer Numerical Control Programmer position at Fairbanks Morse Defense?

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented CNC Programmer experienced in using ESPRIT CAM software to support multi-axis CNC lathes, vertical turning centers, 5-axis mill-turn machines. This position plays a key role in developing efficient, accurate, and safe CNC programs that produce precision components for defense-related electric motor systems.

In addition to ESPRIT programming, this role also requires hands-on experience programming CNC grinding machines directly at the machine control. The ideal candidate will be comfortable programming both in software and at the control level, ensuring high accuracy and quality on precision-ground components.

The CNC Programmer will collaborate with machinists, engineers, and production staff to deliver first-part success and continuous improvement across all machining operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs in ESPRIT for multi-axis lathes, VTLs, and 5-axis mill-turn machines.

• Program and edit grinding machine programs directly at the control, ensuring proper wheel selection, dressing cycles, feeds/speeds, and part tolerances.

• Simulate and verify toolpaths to ensure safe, efficient, and gouge-free operations.

• Generate detailed setup sheets, tool lists, and documentation to support shop floor execution.

• Collaborate closely with machinists and engineers to prove out new programs, validate first-piece quality, and refine existing processes.

• Analyze machining operations and implement changes to improve cycle time, tool life, and quality.

• Develop and maintain standardized tooling libraries and post processors.

• Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T specifications to ensure conformance to design intent.

• Support fixture design, workholding, and process planning for new product introductions.

• Troubleshoot machining or grinding issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.

• Maintain organized records of programs, revisions, and process documentation in accordance with company standards.

• Promote a culture of teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or formal training in CNC programming or manufacturing technology preferred.

• Minimum 5 years of experience programming CNC machines, including mill-turn and multi-axis lathes. Preferred to have experience using ESPRIT CAM software.

• Experience programming CNC grinding machines directly at the machine control (not through CAM software).

• Strong understanding of G-code, toolpath strategies, and precision machining principles.

• Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, GD&T, and manufacturing drawings.

• Familiarity with CNC controls such as Okuma OSP, Fanuc and Siemens.

• Experience with materials such as steel, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys (e.g., Inconel, stainless).

• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with production and engineering.

• Experience working under ISO 9001 or similar quality management systems preferred.

• U.S. Person status required (to comply with defense contract requirements).

Working Conditions:

• Clean, well-maintained defense manufacturing facility.

• Requires standing or sitting for extended periods depending on programming or prove-out activities.

• Use of PPE and compliance with all safety protocols is mandatory.

• Occasional overtime may be required based on production schedules or new job launches.
