Senior Real Estate Accountant

Job Summary

The Senior Real Estate Accountant is responsible for overseeing complex accounting functions for multiple real estate development projects and entities. This role plays a key part in financial reporting, project cost control, financing compliance, and investor reporting, while also providing assistance to the accounting staff and partnering closely with development, construction, and management team.

Key Responsibilities

Development & Project Accounting

• Oversee full-cycle accounting for multiple real estate development projects from acquisition through disposition
• Review and approve capitalization of land, construction, financing, and soft costs in accordance with GAAP
• Monitor project budgets, forecasts, and job cost reports; analyze and explain variances
• Review construction draw packages, lender requisitions, and retainage schedules
• Ensure accuracy of project close-outs and transitions to operating assets

Financial Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Produce project-level and portfolio-level financial reports and cash flow analyses
• Assist with consolidations across multiple entities, joint ventures, and funds
• Support external audits, lender reviews, and due diligence requests

Financing & Investor Accounting

• Oversee construction loan accounting, interest accruals, fees, and covenant compliance
• Prepare and review capital calls, distributions, and investor reporting packages
• Support partnership accounting, equity tracking, and waterfall calculations
• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders on financing and equity structures

Accounts Payable Oversight

• Review and approve vendor invoices, consultant fees, and construction costs
• Ensure payments align with contracts, budgets, and loan requirements
• Maintain strong internal controls over disbursements

Tax & Compliance

• Coordinate with external tax advisors on entity and property-level tax filings
• Support cost segregation studies, property tax filings, and sales/use tax compliance
• Ensure adherence to accounting policies, internal controls, and regulatory requirements

Leadership & Process Improvement

• Improve accounting processes, systems, and internal controls as the portfolio scales
• Assist with implementation and optimization of accounting and project management software

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 5–10 years of accounting experience, with significant real estate development experience
• Proven experience managing complex, multi-entity and project-based accounting

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate development accounting
• Advanced proficiency with real estate and construction accounting systems (e.g. Sage, QuickBooks, Procore)
• AI & Data Strategy: Develop and refine spreadsheets using AI tools to automate workflows and create high-level financial models for bank and investor presentations.
• Advanced Excel skills, including financial modeling and analysis

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA or CPA-eligible strongly preferred
• Experience with joint ventures, private equity, or fund structures
• Exposure to development financing, construction lending, and investor reporting

Work Environment

Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
