The Engineer Module C:

Performs standard engineering procedures, preventive maintenance, and repair of boilers and associated heating and ventilation systems. Troubleshoots system issues, determines the need for repair or replacement of equipment, and ensures safe and efficient operation of all assigned systems.

Estimates and secure materials required for specific job components and work orders. Provides leadership, technical guidance, and mentorship to Zone Maintenance Technicians to support quality workmanship and timely completion of assignments.

Actively participates in the Engineer Pay for Knowledge and Skills Program, including on-the-job training and skill development. Demonstrates proficiency in all required module tasks as outlined in the Engineer Pay for Skills section, working independently or collaboratively as part of a team, and performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Performs routine safety checks on boilers, heating furnaces and all heating and ventilating equipment.

  • Maintains clean job site throughout duration and cleans up job site following work completion. Maintains safe working conditions for self and others. Stores and maintains supplies, tools and equipment.

  • Provides leadership and guidance to others who perform similar work. Sets priorities and timelines and monitors the work of others.

  • Repairs, replaces and adjusts pumps, fans, motors, steam valves, heat exchangers, mechanical seals, and building stationary equipment. Works from blueprints, specifications and schematic diagrams.

  • Monitors and maintains emergency generators, fountains, water softeners and swimming pool equipment. Conducts analysis of water system (boiler water, condensate water, cooling water, soft water system, heating and hot water system, lab equipment and city water) and adjusts chemical levels as required.

  • Identifies and resolves operational and safety problems pertaining to heating and ventilating system.

  • Responds to on-call emergencies.

  • Inspects exhaust fans and motors, chemical fume hoods, sump pumps, sewage ejectors, air compressors, condensate pumps, circulating pumps, cooling water system, furnaces, heat exchangers and reverse osmosis units (distilled water system).

  • Installs equipment and fabricates components for system and equipment.

  • Estimates materials required for specific job components.

  • Prepares reports and/or maintenance records, as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years’ experience as a trade-related trainee may substitute for completion of a four year apprenticeship program.

  • Additional five years’ minimum experience must be as a journeyman.

  • 500 (HP) License (HSC Engineers) or Unlimited License

  • Familiar with city and state building codes, OSHA rules and regulations, standard safety practices and equipment, and other requirements for workplace safety.

  • General knowledge of trade-related methods, materials, tools, and equipment.

  • Experience performing standard trade-related procedures.

  • Valid CA driver's license required with a minimum of 2 years’ driving experience. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.   • High school diploma, or equivalent, and completion of a 4-year apprenticeship program

Hourly Range:

The hourly range for this position is $43.00/hr. - $44.78/hr. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
