What are the responsibilities and job description for the Design Materials Advisor Intern (Client Facing) position at Fabric Backing & Finishing Co?
About Us
Fabric Backing & Finishing Co. works with leading interior designers and showrooms to prepare high-end fabrics for real-world use. From upholstery to wallcoverings to drapery, we help ensure materials perform beautifully while meeting functional requirements such as durability, stain resistance, and fire standards.
Our clients work with some of the most premium fabrics in the market — and rely on us to guide how those materials are treated and applied.
About This Role (Read This First)
This is not a typical internship.
We are taking a 30 year-old business—trusted by interior designers working with high-end fabrics—and rebuilding how it operates and grows.
The core of the business is strong.
The systems, processes, and growth approach are not.
We are modernizing:
- How we operate
- How we engage customers
- How we grow
And building a small team to be part of that transformation.
This role is for someone who wants real exposure, real responsibility, and rapid growth—not a passive internship.
If you are looking for a structured, low-responsibility internship, this is not the right role.
What You’ll Actually Be Doing
You will sit at the front end of the business, working directly with interior designers to determine how fabrics should be treated and applied.
- Advise on material treatments (backing, stain protection, flame resistance, moisture barriers, etc.)
- Translate design intent into real-world application
- Review and structure orders before they go into production
- Communicate with clients to clarify needs and prevent errors
- Work closely with production to ensure execution is correct
You will learn quickly because you will be in the flow of real decisions, not observing from the side.
What Makes This Different
- You will see how a real business operates—not a theoretical one
- You will be exposed to both operations and growth strategy
- You will work directly with the owner
- You will have the opportunity to grow into a client-facing / business development role
Who This Is For
This is not for everyone.
This is for someone who:
- Wants to be challenged and pushed
- Learns quickly and takes ownership
- Is detail-oriented to the point of catching things others miss
- Is comfortable speaking with clients early
- Is more interested in growth and exposure than a traditional internship experience
You may be:
- Studying interior design, textiles, or a related field
- Or simply interested in how design translates into real-world execution
What Matters Most
We are not optimizing for experience.
We are looking for:
- Judgment
- Curiosity
- Reliability
- Maturity
- Drive
The rest can be taught.
Location & Details
- Alpharetta, GA (North Atlanta)
- Part-time or full-time options available
- Flexible scheduling depending on academic commitments
Future Opportunity
Top performers will move into a full-time, client-facing role with growth into business development.
This is not just an internship—it is a potential entry point into building something long-term.
